I'm all for making lists.
I make one before I go to the bathroom every morning.
Personally, I've got no problem with the list but even though 100 is a lot, it's not nearly enough.

Any list that doesn't include 'Sugar Sugar' by the Archies is okay by me.

Purely arbitrary. Given 1000 different people, if u gave them these 100 songs to list from number one to number 100, you would have 1000 different orderings of songs. Don't take it to heart that someone, or a small group of people, put together this list, as if it were the one and only list of the top 100 songs. Personally, I think that "Time of the Season" by the Zombies is the all time, number one song of the rock and roll century. Others might call me delusional, and perhaps, rightly so. We could make a list here, but how many people would agree with the order of songs. There would have to be lots of compromise, if we were ever gonna finish a top 100 list. So, just enjoy them in the order that YOU wish . . .and "rock on, dude!"
ps. Ok, now I'm REALLY pissed. I was forced to put on my reading glasses to check the dictionary and make shure I was spelling the word "compromise" correctly.

The list seems pretty safe. I've seen a lot of similiar lists and they all contain 80% of the same songs. Not too many songs from the last 20 years. I prefer to see people's own personal top lists.

same here. it looks like quite a predictable list. some of those songs were pretty damnb influential too (satisfaction, like a rolling stone)...

some of them have become generic rock anthems over the years (stairway, hotel california... though i can stand neither).

a lot of them are pretty big era-definers.
the problem with era-definers is that they aren't necessarily GOOD songs. they're usually a synopsis of the act's career in six easy minutes. (light my fire, like a rolling stone), but that's just the way it is.

but as lists go, this is quite standard fare.

how about we make our own lists?

my top 10 for today...
1.desolation row - bob dylan
2.for no one - the beatles
3.accidents will happen - elvis costello
4.venus - television
5.insignificance - pearl jam
6.chest fever - the band
7.suspicious minds - elvis presley
8.sacrificial bonfire - XTC
9.you don't have to say you love me - dusty springfield
10. box of rain - the grateful dead

again, this will change in the next hour, and i'm too dead to compile a hundred song list, but i will eventually! anybody else?

In my opinion, Stairway to Heaven is the best rock song ever composed.

The Fact that Bruce Springsteen is in top 10 shows that no one knows what the **** their talking about...the Rolling Stones are great but no where near number one, they're a band that everyone knows, that everyone loves but they didn't create the greatest rock song. The People of Rolling Stone magazine who wrote this list clearly don't know anything about classic rock, or the legends who dominate the culture. In my opinon the top 10 songs should have been..."A Day in the Life- The Beatles, Breathe- Pink Floyd, Wasted and I can't Find my way Home- Blind Faith, Crossroads- Cream, 10,000 Miles Beneath my Brain- 10 years after, Highway to Hell- AC/DC, Tommy- The Who, Sympothy For the Devil- Rolling Stones, Peace Frog- The Doors, and Red House- Jimi Hendrix, but then again thats just my opinon. Anyhow I disagree with this list.

honestly you guys, stairway to heaven placed third???? how many times have yuou seen that happen? and the song respect placed over stairway to hevaen is an even bigger disgrace. I know that everyones list is different, but come on, respect is bein placed over so many great song like behind blue eyes and purple haze. now at least gimme this, that is really bad. also, the rolling stones are defiently not good enough to be numero uno. there good and all, but not good enough to beat others.
