What amazes me is the fact that there is absolutely no agreement on what would constitute a legit list these days (judging from the thread thus far). I can remember a time when there was almost universal agreement that "Stairway To Heaven" and "Layla" were the two greatest rock songs ever.

I think what happens now is that you have 50 years of rock music and several generations of listeners with very widely varying tastes. Consensus? Forget it! Ain't gonna happen!

You took the words right out of my mouth. ;) Along with wide variance of age and taste, there's also the notion that if you've listened long enough, you get tired of a lot of stuff. No one loves Stairway to Heaven more than I, but I've heard it enough in my 38 years. Same with a lot on that list. I could go the rest of my life without hearing Money ever again, or Born To Run. Doesn't mean I don't like them, or PF or Bruce. I just wanna hear something else.

I was, however, happy to see Won't Get Fooled Again at 17. Pinball Wizard is another I'd never want to hear ever again, unless I'm spinning all of Tommy.

All that aside, I believe this list was comprised by number of requests to hear a song over a certain amount of time. I do find it interesting that the majority have been for Satisfaction, tho.

Well, I'm different than a lot of listeners on that score. It's probably because I've all but stopped listening to any radio. I have a large record collection, and I listen widely; so if I'm tired of, say, "Stairway To Heaven", I just don't get it out for a few months. By that time, I'm ready to hear it again.

Anyhow, I don't think I've ever gotten to the point with a song I really enjoy that I'd never want to hear it again.

Rev. Rock. You are right on the money. Top song charts are decided by a personal preference more than anything. I think sometimes the charts are more what the chartmakers think should be on the list and not so much what deserves to be there. Louie, Louie for instance. Admittedly when you are college age and drunk at a party it's a great song. It's easy to sing along, and if you mess up the lines who knows or cares. A top 100 song? That is a long stretch. Top 100 songs are only good as a source of conversation and debate.

hey ive got an idea....why dont we do the most overplayed and thoroughly beaten to death rock songs of all times...i think it would be appropriate to start with stairway and hotel california, born to run...this sounds familiar. Classic rock doesnt change, thats the problem, people need to stop listening only to the same songs they've been listening to since they hit the charts and check out some of the lesser known, less popular, equally great songs which are consistently overlooked. time to give stairway to heaven the stairway to heaven...its been beaten to the point of no return
