What the masses like has no bearing on the quality of the music. If all they're presented with is crap, then they'll buy crap.

If you watch the video, there is a lady who says she wants to hear something that sounds like other bands she listens to, but with different lyrics. This is the formula they use to sell music these days.

The conglomerates who own the studios just want to make a buck. They're not out there to find the most musically talented bands and nuture them for years hoping they one day connect with an audience. That's too risky and expensive for them. So instead, they mass market singers like Kate Perry and convince the easily convinceable that she's actually a talented artist, and people like you believe it.
