1941 Guitarist Manny Charlton (of Nazareth) is born in La Linea, Spain.

1973 The Doobie Brothers release "China Grove."

1999 On the third day of the Woodstock '99 festival on Griffiss Air Force Base, overpriced water, overflowing toilets and a Limp Bizkit performance of "Break Stuff" leads to riots, groping and injuries. Conditions deteriorate as the festival rages on, and by the final day, MTV is covering the event with the tagline, "Apocalypse Woodstock."

2013 After Killswitch Engage drummer Justin Foley breaks his collarbone in bicycle accident the band recruits As I Lay Dying drummer Jordan Mancino for touring.

1990, Brent Mydland from The Grateful Dead was found dead on the floor of his home aged 38 from a drug overdose

2008, Klaxons singer Jamie Reynolds postponed the group's Australian tour dates after he broke his leg at a gig in France. The bands singer said he "drastically misjudged" the distance when he jumped from the stage during their final song in the set.

2013, US singer-songwriter JJ Cale died of a heart attack at the age of 74. He became famous in 1970, when Eric Clapton covered his song 'After Midnight'. In 1977 Clapton also popularised Cale's 'Cocaine'. The two worked together on an album which won a Grammy award in 2008.

2000 - Oasis stormed off stage after being hit with bottles, can and coins at a Swiss music festival.

1949 Roger Taylor (drummer for Queen) is born in Dersingham, Norfolk, England.

1950 Singer/keyboardist Duncan Mackay (of 10cc) is born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England.

1960 Rock singer/songwriter Gary Cherone (of Extreme and Van Halen) is born in Malden, Massachusetts.

2003 Limp Bizkit appear at the Hawthorne Racetrack in Chicago as part of Metallica's Summer Sanitarium tour with Deftones, Linkin Park and Mudvayne. But the crowd soon shows how they feel about front man Fred Durst and his crew, as the band is booed and Durst is pelted with coins and bottles, leading him to launch into homophobic taunts. As a result, Limp Bizkit leaves the stage after 30 minutes and only six songs, but not before Durst challenges audience members to a fight.

1977: Elvis Costello was arrested for playing outside of a CBS Records conference being held at the Hilton in London. Soon afterwards Costello would be signed to CBS.

1977: Robert Plant’s son Karac died of an unidentified viral infection. Led Zeppelin’s tour of North America was immediately cancelled.

2003: Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain was arrested before their concert in Wantagh, NY after allegedly running over a parking attendant in his 2004 Jaguar. McBrain was issued a ticket & released in time to make the concert.

2004: A Staples back-to-school campaign commercial starring Alice Cooper humorously utilizing Cooper’s “School’s Out” premiered nationally. The commercial depicted Cooper in the role of a father shopping for back-to-school supplies with his daughter who is unhappy about returning to school.

1974 - Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" is released in America, where it would become their highest charting single, reaching #8. If you listen carefully, you can hear Ronnie Van Zant shout "Turn it up", asking producer Al Kooper and engineer Rodney Mills to turn up the volume in his headphones so that he could hear the track better.

1976 - John Lennon finally received his US Green Card, three years after he was ordered to leave by immigration officials.

2001 - Leon Wilkeson, bassist for the southern Rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd was found dead in a Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida hotel room. Allegedly suffering from chronic liver and lung disease, the official cause of death was deemed from natural causes. He was 49.
