This Day In Music History: March 1st


1968 Johnny Cash marries June Carter of the gospel stars The Carter Family a week after proposing to her on stage at a show in London, Ontario. Their marriage holds up until her death in May 2003, with Johnny passing away four months later.

1927 Harry Belafonte is born in Harlem, New York, but at age 8 moves to Jamaica (his mother's birthplace) with his family. The Belafontes move back to New York in the early stages of World War II; in the '50s, Harry becomes a top entertainer, his career buoyed by the calypso craze.

1944 Roger Daltrey of The Who is born in London.

1944 Mike D'Abo of Manfred Mann is born in Surrey, England.

1974 Rush release their eponymous debut album. With drummer and creative catalyst Neil Peart yet to join the band, the sound is very different from the one that will become Rush's trademark. Still, the album's "Working Man" becomes a breakout song in blue-collar Cleveland, Ohio, after winning WMMS disc jockey Donna Halper's endorsement. One year later the band release Fly by Night, their first album to include Peart.

1973 - Pink Floyd released their eighth studio album, Dark Side of the Moon. The band developed the album during live performances, and performed an early version several months before recording began. It was conceived as a concept album that would explore themes such as conflict, greed, time, death and mental illness. The album debuted at an inauspicious #95 on the US Albums chart but eventually became the album with the most weeks on the tally, thanks in large part to a run from 1977-1988 when it never left. In 2012, it was selected for preservation in the US National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

1977 Sara Lowndes Dylan files for divorce from her husband of eleven years, Bob Dylan. The divorce is granted in June and she is given custody of their 5 kids and possession of their million-dollar home. Sara was the subject of such songs as "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands", "Lay Lady Lay" and "Sara".

2016 76-year-old Ginger Baker posted on his blog that he had canceled all of his scheduled shows for the year and was going into immediate retirement. The former drummer for Cream and Blind Faith revealed that his doctor had just diagnosed him with serious heart problems, causing him to announce "No more gigs for this old drummer." Ginger, who was born Peter Edward Baker, would pass away on October 6th, 2019 at the age of 80.

2025 Guitarist Joey Molland, of the English rock group Badfinger, passed away at the age of 77. He appeared on seven studio albums between 1970 and 1981, as well as four Billboard hit singles, "Come And Get It", "No Matter What", "Day After Day" and "Baby Blue".

1942 Lou Reed is born Lewis Allan Reed in Brooklyn, New York.

1948 Irish rocker Rory Gallagher is born William Rory Gallagher in Ballyshannon, County Donegal, Ireland.

1950 Karen Carpenter (of the Carpenters) is born in New Haven, Connecticut.

1956 Mark Evans (bassist for AC/DC) is born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, where he meets his future bandmates at the city's Station Hotel in 1975.

1962 Jon Bon Jovi is born John Francis Bongiovi in Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

2007 Jimi Hendrix was crowned the 'wildest guitar hero' of all-time in a poll of music fans for Classic Rock magazine. Hendrix beat Keith Richards into second place, with Stevie Ray Vaughan in third. Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page made it to number four, followed by Dimebag Darrell, who played for several heavy metal bands including Pantera and Damageplan.

2008 Canadian guitarist, singer, Jeff Healey, died of cancer. Healey lost his sight to retinoblastoma, a rare cancer of the eyes when he was 8 months old, resulting in his eyes being surgically removed. After living cancer-free for 38 years, he developed sarcoma in his legs. Despite surgery for this, the sarcoma spread to his lungs and ultimately was the cause of his death. Healey released over 12 albums, presented a long running radio show and worked with many artists incuding; Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, ZZ Top & Eric Clapton.

This Day In Rock History: March 2nd


1968: The Who performed at New Edmonton Gardens in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. After the show they were thrown out of their hotel’s English-style pub for having long hair. In response, bassist John Entwistle wrote the song “What Are We Doing Here?,” which was later released as part of his 1971 solo album Smash Your Head Against the Wall.

1978: Patti Smith released what became her biggest hit, “Because the Night.” The song was initially partially written and recorded by Bruce Springsteen during sessions for his fourth album, Darkness on the Edge of Town, but Springsteen wasn’t satisfied with it and left it unfinished. Engineer Jimmy Iovine, who was simultaneously working on both Springsteen’s album and Smith’s third album, Easter, at New York’s Record Plant Studios, took the tape and offered it Smith, who finished it, and released the record as her album’s first single.
