1981 - The Who release "You Better You Bet," their first single since the death of their drummer, Keith Moon, in 1978. Their new stickman is Kenney Jones, formerly of the Faces.

1984 - Queen released their 11th album, The Works. It features “Radio Ga Ga” and “I Want to Break Free.”

1954 Neal Schon is born on an Air Force base in Oklahoma. The guitarist does time in Santana before founding the groups Journey and Bad English.

1959 Johnny Van Zant is born in Jacksonville, Florida. He performs and records with the Johnny Van Zant Band and as a solo artist, but is best known for succeeding his deceased brother Ronnie Van Zant as frontman for Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1987.

1971 Five months after her death, Janis Joplin started a nine-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with her second and final solo studio album Pearl. Joplin sang on all tracks except 'Buried Alive in the Blues', which remained a Full Tilt Boogie instrumental because she died before adding her vocals.

2019 English drummer Doug Sandom died one day after his 89th birthday. He was the first drummer for the rock band The Who. No recordings with Sandom playing with the band were ever released.

1942 Rolling Stones founding member Brian Jones is born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. He is the group's leader early on, but dies in 1969 at age 27.

1957 Cindy Wilson is born in Athens, Georgia, where along with her brother Ricky and three other friends, she forms The B-52s.

2006 Bruce Springsteen releases Hammersmith Odeon London 1975.

2008 Mike Smith (lead vocalist, keyboardist for The Dave Clark Five) dies of pneumonia at age 64.

1969: The Hollies released “Sorry Suzanne.” Co-written by Geoff Stephens and Tony Macaulay, it was the group’s first song to feature Terry Sylvester in the place of former member Graham Nash

1970: After the granddaughter of the late Ferdinand von Zeppelin—inventor of the zeppelin— threatened a lawsuit, Led Zeppelin played a show in Copenhagen, Denmark during a tour of Europe as “The Nobs,” a pun based on the name of their European promoter, Claude Nobs. As a gesture of good will, the band invited Countess Eva von Zeppelin to meet with them at a television studio, but her anger was reignited upon seeing the band’s debut album cover, which depicts the exploding Hindenburg. The controversy gained the band worldwide publicity.

1985: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released “Don’t Come Around Here No More,” the lead single from their sixth studio album, Southern Accents. The song was co-written and co-produced by Dave Stewart of Eurythmics.

This Day In Rock History: February 28th


2025, David Johansen, the last surviving member of punk band New York Dolls died at his home in New York at age 75. He is also known for his work under the pseudonym Buster Poindexter and for playing the Ghost of Christmas Past in Scrooged (1988). Johansen announced in February that he was suffering from stage four cancer, a brain tumor and a broken back. A 2020 diagnosis prevented him from performing for the final years of his life.
