1939 Grace Slick (of Jefferson Airplane) is born in Highland Park, Illinois.

1946 Drummer Chris Slade (of Uriah Heep, AC/DC, Manfred Mann) is born Christopher Rees in Pontypridd, Glamorgan, Wales

1947 Timothy B. Schmit (bass guitarist for Eagles, Poco) is born in Oakland, California.

1968 Malcolm Hale (lead guitarist for Spanky & Our Gang) dies of pneumonia at age 27.

1970 Hotlegs (later renamed 10cc) make their concert debut at London's Royal Festival Hall.

2003 Pink Floyd manager Steve O'Rourke dies after suffering a stroke at age 63.

2007 Eagles release Long Road Out of Eden, available at first only at the band's website, Wal-Mart, and Sam's Club stores.

2013 Peter Haycock (frontman for Climax Blues Band) dies of a heart attack in Frankfurt, Germany, at age 62.

This Day In Rock History: October 30th


1970 Hotlegs made their live debut supporting The Moody Blues at the Festival Hall, London. Their only hit 'Neanderthal Man' made No. 2 in July 1970. The members from the group went on to become 10cc.

1971 Pink Floyd released their sixth studio album Meddle in the US. The album features 'One Of These Days' and the 23-minute track 'Echoes' which took up all of side 2 on the vinyl record. The cover image was photographed by Bob Dowling. The image represents an ear, underwater, collecting waves of sound, represented by ripples in the water.

1952 - Pianist Johnnie Johnson hired 26-year-old Chuck Berry as a guitarist in his band. While playing evening gigs in the St. Louis area, Berry kept his day job as a hairdresser for the next three years.

1975 - Queen released "Bohemian Rhapsody". It was written by Freddie Mercury for the band's 1975 album A Night at the Opera and it was reportedly the most expensive single ever made at the time of its release, although the exact cost of production cannot be determined.

1990 - During a gig in Seattle, Billy Idol dumped 600 dead fish in Faith No More's dressing room. They responded by walking on stage naked during Idol's set. The Los Angeles Times reported: "When the pay-back came, Idol grinned widely as the naked men cavorted onstage in a conga line, wearing only masks or T-shirts over their heads.

1945 Russ Ballard (Unit 4+2 guitarist and Argent frontman) is born in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, England.

1961 U2 drummer Larry Mullen is born in Artane, Dublin, Ireland.

1992 Joan Jett stars in an episode of the TV series Highlander, playing one of the immortals. Her version of "Cherry Bomb" is featured.

1974 Led Zeppelin held the UK launch for their new record label Swan Song at Chislehurst Caves, Kent, England on Halloween night. Drinks were served by nuns in suspenders, a naked woman lay in a coffin covered in jelly and naked male wrestlers cavorted in recesses of the caves. Label mates Bad Company, The Pretty Things and Maggie Bell also attended. The launch also tied in with the releases of The Pretty Things new album Silk Torpedo. The label was named after an unreleased Zeppelin instrumental track.

1967 - Iggy and the Stooges made their live debut when they played at a Halloween party in Michigan. During this early period, the Stooges were originally billed as the "Psychedelic Stooges" and had a very different sound from what they eventually developed - it was much more avant-garde and experimental, with Pop incorporating such household objects as a vacuum cleaner and a blender into intense walls of feedback that one observer described as sounding like "an airplane was landing in the room."

1969: David Bowie appeared at a Halloween gig at the General Gordon pub in Gravesend, England. In a performance that lasted fifteen minutes, Bowie sang “Space Oddity,” then dragged a stool on stage, from which he proceeded to read poetry before he was booed off stage.

1969: The Moody Blues released “Watching and Waiting,” the lead single from their fifth studio album, To Our Children’s Children.

1972: Jethro Tull released the quasi-compilation collection Living in the Past in the US. The double album contains album tracks, out-takes, and non-album singles—many of which had never before been available in the American market.
