This Day In Rock History: October 26th

1970 Elton John's "Your Song" is released. It would be Elton's first international Top 10 single, reaching that chart in Great Britain, Netherlands, Canada and The United States.

1980 Jefferson Starship leader Paul Kantner suffers a small stroke during a recording session. His wife initially doesn't believe him, but eventually calls the hospital's front desk and said, "Would you please get an ambulance for this ass hole?" He would make a full recovery after two weeks in the hospital.

1968: English rock band Smile played one of their first (if not their very first) live gigs at London’s Imperial College in support of Pink Floyd and The Troggs. A few years later, after the departure of lead singer and bassist Tim Staffell, Smile’s guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor joined bassist John Deacon and Freddie Mercury to form the classic lineup of Queen.

1979: Pat Benatar released “Heartbreaker,” the third single from her debut album, In the Heat of the Night.

1980 Steve Took, original percussionist of T. Rex, dies in New Kensington, London, at age 31. Although he had taken drugs, his official cause of death was asphyxiation after inhaling a cocktail cherry.

1982 - Prince released his fifth album, 1999. It was a breakthrough, selling well over 5 million copies worldwide, thanks to "Little Red Corvette" and the title track. Following Prince's death in 2016, the album re-entered the Billboard 200 and peaked at number seven, besting its original performance on the chart thirty-three years earlier. A re-release and remaster of the album, including 35 previously unreleased recordings, was released in November 2019.
