1971: John Lennon’s single “Imagine” was released in US following the release of his album of the same name in September. Just under two weeks later the record was issued in the UK. The song became the best-selling single of Lennon’s solo career, and shortly before his death, Lennon stated that much of the song’s lyric and content had come from his wife Yoko Ono, who received a co-writing credit in 2017.

1927 Guitarist Joe Olivier (of Bill Haley And His Comets) is born in Maastricht, Limburg, Netherlands.

1948 Rick Parfitt (vocalist/guitarist for Status Quo) is born in Woking, Surrey, England.

1979 Jethro Tull lead singer Ian Anderson has his right eye torn open by a thorn, situated on a rose an adoring fan threw on stage at the band's Madison Square Garden concert.

1979 Fleetwood Mac release Tusk, their first album since the wildly successful Rumours in 1977. A double album with less commercial appeal, Mick Fleetwood credits it with keeping the band together, as the band members were free to experiment.

1987 INXS release their breakthrough album Kick, with the hits "Need You Tonight," "Devil Inside" and "New Sensation."

1991 The Day on the Green Festival takes place at Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, California. Headlined by Metallica, the lineup also includes Queensrÿche, Faith No More and Soundgarden.

2009 Blue Cheer singer/bassist Dickie Peterson dies from liver cancer at the age of 63, in Erkelenz, Germany.

1975: Faces played their final concert at New York’s Nassau Coliseum. Rod Stewart had been having increased success as a solo artist, Ronnie Lane had left the group, and Ron Wood had already begun working with the Rolling Stones.

1996: Recorded 28 years earlier in 1968, The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus was commercially released following two days of screenings at the Walter Reade Theater as part of the New York Film Festival. Organized by the Rolling Stones and featuring performances by Jethro Tull, Taj Mahal, The Who, Marianne Faithfull, and John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Eric Clapton, Mitch Mitchell, and Keith Richards as the Dirty Mac, the show was originally meant to air on the BBC, but was instead shelved by the Stones, who cited what they considered their own substandard performance. Some speculate it may have gone unreleased either because the Who upstaged the Stones, or because it was the last appearance with the Rolling Stones by founding member Brian Jones, who died less than a year later during editing.

1997 John Denver was killed when the handmade, experimental airplane he was flying ran out of gas and crashed off the coast of Monterey Bay, California. The 53 year old star had scored 15 songs on Billboard's Top 40 Pop chart, ten of which reached number one on either Billboard's Adult Contemporary or Country chart. The Great Gig In The Sky.

1994, Pink Floyd played the first of a 15-night run at Earls Court, London, England. Less than a minute after the band had started playing “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” a scaffolding stand holding 1200 fans, collapsed, throwing hundreds of people 20 feet to the ground. It took over an hour to free everyone from the twisted wreckage, ninety-six people were injured, with 36 needing hospital treatment. Six were detained overnight with back, neck and rib injuries. Pink Floyd sent a free T-shirt and a note of apology to all the fans who had been seated in the stand that collapsed. The show was immediately cancelled and re-scheduled.

2005, Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee suffered minor burns at a concert in Casper, Wyoming during a pyrotechnics explosion. Lee was treated at a local hospital for the injuries to his arm and face, which occurred while he was suspended from a wire thirty feet above the stage.
