1944 Guitarist Mick Ralphs of Mott the Hoople and Bad Company is born in Herefordshire, England.

1955 Angus Young is born in Glasgow, Scotland. He later moves to Australia and forms AC/DC with his brother Malcolm.

1958 Pat McGlynn (rhythm guitarist for Bay City Rollers) is born in Edinburgh, Scotland.

1958 - Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" was released.

1967 - The Jimi Hendrix Experience began its first British tour. The show featured the first time that Hendrix set a guitar on fire. In 2008, the scorched instrument sold for more than $450,000 at auction.

1976 Led Zeppelin released Presence, their seventh studio album, on their own Swan Song Records in the UK. Presence has now been certified 3 times Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for US sales in excess of 3 million copies.

1992 Def Leppard released their fifth studio album Adrenalize, the first by the band following the 1991 death of guitarist Steve Clark. Former Dio and Whitesnake guitarist Vivian Campbell, was brought in as the newest member in April 1992. He appears in all promotional videos for the album's singles (except 'Let's Get Rocked'), despite not playing on the album.

2015 Boz Scaggs releases his eighteenth studio album, "A Fool To Care". The collection is a mix of Rock and Blues tunes done in the classic Scaggs style. It would reach #54 on the Billboard 200 chart.

1984 Marvin Gaye was shot dead by his father at his parent's home in Los Angeles, California. The argument started after his parents squabbled over misplaced business documents, Gaye attempted to intervene, and was killed by his father using a gun he had given him four months before. Marvin Sr. was sentenced to six years of probation after pleading guilty to manslaughter. Charges of first-degree murder were dropped after doctors discovered Marvin Sr. had a brain tumour.

2015 Cynthia Lennon, first wife of The Beatles' John Lennon died at her home in Spain following a short battle with cancer. At the height of The Beatles' early success she was, at the insistence of the band's management, kept in the background so their legions of female fans were not aware of her existence. The couple divorced in 1968 after Cynthia discovered her husband's affair with Yoko Ono.

1966 The Troggs use 45 minutes of spare studio time to record "Wild Thing" at Regent Sound Studio in London. The raw, simple little tune would climb to #2 in the UK and #1 in the US, selling over a million copies by the following June.

2022 C. W. McCall, who topped both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart with "Convoy" in January, 1976, died of cancer at the age of 93. The song was popular at the height of the CB radio craze, sold over two million copies, and was awarded a Gold disc by the RIAA in December 1975. Born William Dale Fries Jr., he also placed twelve more tunes on the Country chart between 1974 and 1978.

1945 Rock drummer John Barbata (Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship) is born in Passaic, New Jersey.

1946 Bass guitarist Ronnie Lane (Small Faces and Faces) is born in Plaistow, London, England.

1954 Rock drummer Jeff Porcaro (of Toto) is born in South Windsor, Connecticut.

1992 Nigel Preston, drummer and founding member of The Cult, dies of a h.e.r.o.i.n. overdose at age 28.

2004 Guitarist Paul Atkinson (of The Zombies) dies at age 58 from liver and kidney disease, while also suffering from cancer.

1971 John Entwistle releases his and The Who’s first commercial solo record “I Believe In Everything” backed with “My Size.” To promote it he hires a stagecoach with livery to deliver the single to Harlequin Records in London. The stagecoach ends up getting a parking ticket.

1972 The three-day Mar Y Sol festival in Puerto Rico took place, featuring Rod Stewart, Dr John, The Allman Brothers, Osibisa, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Alice Cooper, The Mahavishnu Orchestra. Security was simple as the event took place on an island accessible by ticket only.
