1963, The first Beatles Monthly was published. A magazine devoted to the group, it continued for 77 editions until 1969 and at its peak was selling over 350,000 copies a month.

1969, The three day US Atlantic City Pop Festival took place at the Atlantic City race track with B.B. King, Janis Joplin, Santana, Three Dog Night, Dr John, Procol Harum, Arthur Brown, Iron Butterfly, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Little Richard, Tim Buckley, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, The Mothers Of Invention and Canned Heat. Joni Mitchell started to cry and ran off stage in the middle of her third song because the crowd was not paying attention to her performance.

1971, The Concert For Bangladesh organized by George Harrison to aid victims of famine and war in Bangladesh took place at New York's Madison Sq Garden. Featuring Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, Billy Preston, Eric Clapton, Ravi Shankar and members from Badfinger. Harrison had to shell out his own money to maintain the fund after legal problems froze all proceeds. The triple album release (the second in a row by Harrison), hit No.1 in the UK and No.2 in the US and received the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

1980, Def Leppard made their US live debut when they appeared at the New York City concert opening for AC/DC. It was also Def Leppard singer Joe Elliott's 21st birthday.

1981 - A new television cable network called MTV (Music Television) started broadcasting music videos, 24 hours a day in the US. The show begins with the intro "Ladies and gentlemen, Rock and Roll."

1946 Boz Burrell (bass player for Bad Company) is born in Holbeach, Lincolnshire, England.

1951 Guitarist Tommy Bolin (of Deep Purple and the James Gang) is born in Sioux City, Iowa

1959 Joe Elliot (lead vocalist for Def Leppard) is born is Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England.

1960 Chubby Checker releases "The Twist," starting a dance craze that soon grips the nation.

1964 Adam Duritz (front man for Counting Crows) is born in Berkeley, California.

1972 The Eagles release "Witchy Woman."

1978 Dhani Harrison is born to George Harrison and his soon-to-be-wife Olivia. Dhani, who like his dad becomes a musician, would be the couple's only child

1980 George Harrison forms a movie production company called Handmade Films, which produces the films Monty Python's Life of Brian, The Long Good Friday, Time Bandits, and Shanghai Surprise.

1989 The Rolling Stones release their album Steel Wheels, which contains the hit "Mixed Emotions.

1954 - The "Moondog Jubilee of Stars Under the Stars" took place at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. Acts on the bill included Fats Domino, Muddy Waters, the Clovers, the Orioles, and Little Walter.

1971 - Tony Kaye quit Yes to form Badger. He was replaced by Rick Wakeman.

1951 Bachman-Turner Overdrive guitarist and a founding member, Tim Bachman, is born in Manitoba, Canada. He's Randy's kid brother and eventually goes on to sell real estate in Abbotsford, British Columbia.

1953 Blues guitarist/singer Robert Cray has a birthday.

1968 Dan Donegan, guitarist for Disturbed, is born in Oak Lawn, IL.

2008 Lollapalooza gets underway in Chicago. More than 100 bands hit the stages over three days. Radiohead is the first to sell out their show. "Their production is just incredible," raves Jane's Addiction's Perry Farrell, the festival's organizer. The three-day event also features Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against The Machine and The Raconteurs.

1963, The Beach Boys released 'Surfer Girl', the first song Brian Wilson ever wrote and the first one he produced.

1987, Def Leppard released their fourth studio album Hysteria which became their best selling album to date, selling over 20 million copies worldwide. The title of the album was thought up by drummer Rick Allen relating to his experiences during the time of his car accident, and the worldwide media coverage that followed.

2002, After an absence of 37 years, Bob Dylan returned to the Newport Folk Festival (now known as the Apple and Eve Newport Folk Festival) where he performed a 2 hour show of 19 songs, wearing a false beard and a wig. Songs played included: Subterranean Homesick Blues, 'Desolation Row', 'Positively 4th Street', 'The Wicked Messenger', 'Like A Rolling Stone' and 'Mr. Tambourine Man'.
