1934 Country/rock musician "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow (of The Flying Burrito Brothers) is born in South Bend, Indiana.

1941 Space rock musician Dave Brock (of Hawkwind) is born in Isleworth, Middlesex, England.

1944 Blues drummer "Uncle John" Turner (of Johnny Winter's backing band) is born in Beaumont, Texas.

1947 Trombonist James Pankow (of Chicago) is born in St. Louis, Missouri.

1948 Robert Plant is born in West Bromwich, West Midlands, England. Best known at Led Zeppelin's lead singer, he wins the Album of the Year Grammy for Raising Sand, his 2007 collaboration with Alison Krauss.

1949 Thin Lizzy leader Phil Lynott is born in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England.

1966 Pantera guitarist Darrell Abbott, aka Dimebag Darrell, is born in Ennis, Texas.

1973 The Rolling Stones release "Angie."

2020 Quiet Riot drummer Frankie Banali dies of pancreatic cancer at 68.

1976 The Rolling Stones, 10CC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Todd Rundgren's Utopia and Hot Tuna all appeared at The Knebworth Festival, Hertfordshire, England, tickets £4.50.

1983 Ramones guitarist Johnny Ramone had a four-hour brain surgery operation, after being found unconscious in a New York Street where he had been involved in a fight.

2021 Don Everly, the surviving member of the rock 'n' roll duo The Everly Brothers, has died at the age of 84. Everly and his brother, Phil, had hits worldwide in the late 1950s and early 1960s, including 'Bye Bye Love' and 'All I Have To Do Is Dream'. They were known for their close harmonies, and influenced groups like The Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel. The Beatles based the vocal arrangement of 'Please Please Me' on The Everly's h-i-t Cathy's Clown'.

1941 Keyboardist Tom Coster (of Santana) is born in Detroit, Michigan. He composed "Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smile)" with Carlos Santana.

1952 Rock bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes (of Deep Purple) is born in Cannock, Staffordshire, England. He has a brief stint as Black Sabbath's frontman in the mid-'80s.

1954 Drummer Steve Smith (of Focus and Journey) is born in Whitman, Massachusetts.

2004 Bandleader Al Dvorin, who coined the phrase "Elvis has left he building," dies in a car accident near Ivanpah, California, at age 82. He organized the King's concerts for 22 years, starting in 1955.

2007 Queen's guitarist Brian May was awarded a doctorate in Astronomy, 36 years after starting his thesis. May, who abandoned his studies to pursue a career in music, was told of his success after taking a three-hour exam to discuss his work. The 60-year-old, who handed in his 48,000-word tome earlier in the month, said: "You can call me Dr. May!"

2018 Guitarist Ed King passed away at the age of 68. He had played with Strawberry Alarm Clock on their 1967 hit "Incense And Peppermints" and with Lynyrd Skynyrd on 1974's "Sweet Home Alabama". He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Skynyrd in 2006
