This Day In Rock History: May 29th


1999, Skeletal remains were found by photographers looking for old car wrecks to shoot at the bottom of Decker Canyon near Malibu, California. Based on forensic evidence the remains were Philip Kramer former bassist with rock group Iron Butterfly, who had disappeared on his way home from work on February 12, 1995. His death was ruled as a probable suicide.

1949 Status Quo frontman Francis Rossi is born in Forest Hill, London, England.

1967 Noel Gallagher is born in Burnage, Manchester, England. He and his younger brother Liam form Oasis.

1976 Dave Buckner (original drummer for Papa Roach) is born in Los Angeles, California.

1989 John Cipollina (lead guitarist of Quicksilver Messenger Service) dies at age 45 from Alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency, a genetic disorder that can lead to several diseases including emphysema, liver disease, lung cancer and COPD.

1987, David Bowie kicked off his 87-date Glass Spider world tour at the Feyenoord Stadium, Rotterdam, Holland. The tour's set, described at the time as "the largest touring set ever," was designed to look like a giant spider. It was 60 feet (18.3m) high, 64 feet (19.5m) wide and included giant vacuumed tube legs that were lit from the inside with 20,000' (6,096m) of color-changing lights. A single set took 43 trucks to move.

1944 Lenny Davidson (guitarist for The Dave Clark Five) is born in Enfield, Middlesex, England.

1960 Stephen Duffy is born in Alum Rock, Birmingham, England. A founding member of Duran Duran, he leaves the band shortly before they are signed to EMI. He later finds moderate success as a solo artist under the name Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy with the song "Kiss Me."

1964 Tom Morello (guitarist for Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave) is born in Harlem, New York.

1980 Rock bassist Carl Radle (of Derek and the Dominos) dies of a drug-and-alcohol-related kidney infection at age 37.

1996 John Kahn (bass guitarist for The Jerry Garcia Band) dies of a heart attack at age 48.

1948, Born on this day, English drummer John Bonham from Led Zeppelin who had the 1969 US No.4 single 'Whole Lotta Love'. The bands fourth album released in 1971 featuring the rock classic Stairway To Heaven, has sold over 37 million copies. He is regarded as the greatest and most influential rock drummer of all time. Bonham died on September 25th 1980 aged 32 after choking on his own vomit.

1961, Chuck Berry opened 'Berry Park', an amusement complex near St Louis. The park had its own zoo, golf course and ferris wheel.

1977: Emerson, Lake & Palmer began an American tour accompanied by a 70-piece orchestra.

1999: VH1’s “Behind the Music” began airing nightly. The premiere show was “The Red Hot Chili Peppers: Behind the Music.”

1938 Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul and Mary) is born in Manhattan, New York.

1952 Karl Bartos (of Kraftwerk) is born in Berchtesgaden, Germany.

1961 Jimi Hendrix enlists in the Army for 3 years and is stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, as a member of the Screaming Eagles fighting squad. He is honorably discharged a little over a year later after breaking his ankle during a parachute jump.
