2026 Legendary music executive Clive Davis passed away at the age of 94. As the head of CBS Records he was responsible for signing Janis Joplin, Santana, Bruce Springsteen, Chicago, and Billy Joel. He went on to found Arista Records in 1974, where he worked with Barry Manilow, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Whitney Houston, Patti Smith, and many others. Over the course of his career, Davis won five Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a non-performer, in 2000.

1970, Led Zeppelin appeared in Reykjavik, Iceland on the group’s one and only trip to the country. Singer Robert Plant reportedly was inspired to write “Immigrant Song” during the trip.

1941 Robert Hunter (Grateful Dead lyricist) is born Robert Burns in Oceano, California.

1965 Smokey Robinson and the Miracles release "The Tracks Of My Tears."

1965 The Kinks play a show in Springfield, Illinois, that they later learn was organized by John Wayne Gacy, who would become a notorious serial killer.

1980 The Rolling Stones release Emotional Rescue.

1975, During his 'Welcome To My Nightmare' tour in Vancouver, Canada, Alice Cooper fell from the stage and broke six ribs.

1990, Buddy Holly's Gibson acoustic guitar sold for £139,658 ($237,419) in a Sotheby's auction. The guitar was in a tooled leather case made by Holly himself.

2010, 62-year-old Gregg Allman underwent a successful liver transplant operation at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. Allman had begun a series of treatments for Hepatitis C, but chronic damage of his liver led doctors to recommend a transplant. In a statement to the press, Allman said "I changed my ways years ago, but we can't turn back time. Every day is a gift."

2010 Pete Quaife, the original bassist for The Kinks, died of kidney failure at the age of 66. Quaife played on such early hits as "You Really Got Me", "All Day and All of the Night" and "Tired of Waiting for You" before leaving the group in 1969. He was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame with the rest of the original band in 1990.

2025 Singer and guitarist Mick Ralphs passed away following a stroke at the age of 81. After helping Mott The Hoople reach #10 on the UK chart with "All the Way from Memphis" in 1973, he co-founded Bad Company, where he enjoyed six Billboard Top 40 hits, including "Can't Get Enough" (#5 in 1974) and "Feel Like Makin' Love" (#10 in 1975).

1980: Pink Floyd released “Comfortably Numb,” the third single from the band’s eleventh studio album, The Wall. The lyrics by bassist Roger Waters were inspired by an experience of being injected with tranquilizers for stomach cramps before a 1977 performance in Philadelphia.

1990: Billy Joel concluded a two-day concert at Yankee Stadium in New York. This was the first rock concert ever held at the stadium.
