1942 Terry Melcher, who produces "Kokomo" for The Beach Boys and "Kicks" for Paul Revere & the Raiders, is born in New York City. His mother is Doris Day.

1943 Creed Bratton (former lead vocalist and lead guitarist for The Grass Roots) is born William Charles Schneider in Los Angeles, California.

1946 Paul Wheatbread (drummer for Gary Puckett & the Union Gap) is born in San Diego, California.

1946 Adolfo 'Fito' de la Parra (drummer for Canned Heat) is born in Mexico City, Mexico.

1961 Motley Crue lead singer Vince Neil is born in Los Angeles.

1971 Will Turpin (bassist for Collective Soul) is born in Fairbanks, Alaska.

1975 Queen releases "Killer Queen."

1956 After placing nine previous records on the Billboard Pop chart, Bill Haley And His Comets enjoy their biggest hit when "See You Later Alligator" peaks at #6.

1958 The Diamonds had the best selling record in the United States with their version of "The Stroll". The song also reached number four on the Billboard Pop chart and number five on the R&B chart.

1960 "Teen Angel" by Mark Dinning hit number 1 in the US. The song had been written for him by his sister Jean, who also recorded as one of The Dinning Sisters. Some radio stations banned the song and in the UK, where it barely made the top 40, it was called "the death record."

1981, American singer and musician Bill Haley who became known as the first Rock 'n' Roll star, was found dead, fully clothed on his bed at his home in Harlingen, Texas from a heart attack, aged 55. He scored the 1955 UK & US No.1 single 'Rock Around the Clock' as well as 'See You Later, Alligator’, ‘Shake, Rattle and Roll’, ‘Rocket 88’, ‘Skinny Minnie’, and ‘Razzle Dazzle’. Haley was blinded in his left eye as a child due to a botched operation and later adopted his distinctive spit-curl hairstyle to distract attention from his blind eye.

1997, Scottish singer Brian Connolly with the Seventies Glam rock group Sweet died of kidney and liver failure aged 51. Connolly replaced Ian Gillan (later of Deep Purple and Black Sabbath ) in Wainwright's Gentlemen who became Sweetshop and then shortened to Sweet. The group scored 15 UK top 40 hits including the 1973 No.1 hit ‘Block Buster’.

This Day In Music History: February 10th


1971, American singer-songwriter Carole King released her second studio album Tapestry. It is one of the best-selling albums of all time, with over 25 million copies sold worldwide. The lead single from the album 'It's Too Late'/'I Feel the Earth Move' spent five weeks at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The cover photograph was taken at King's Laurel Canyon home. It shows her sitting in a window frame, holding a tapestry she hand-stitched herself, with her cat Telemachus at her feet.

1942 "Chattanooga Choo Choo" by Glen Miller And His Orchestra becomes the first recording to be awarded a Gold record. It was actually just a master copy of the disc sprayed with gold lacquer by RCA as a publicity stunt. The actual award recognized today as a Gold Record would not be initiated for another sixteen years when the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) borrowed the idea and trademarked the Gold Record. The first Gold single was awarded to Perry Como in 1958 for "Catch A Falling Star" and the first Gold album was given to Gordon McRae for the soundtrack to Oklahoma.

1979 Dire Straits release "Sultans Of Swing."

2017 Tom Petty is honored as Person of the Year at the MusiCares gala, held two days before the Grammy Awards. "Twenty years ago I'd have been way too cynical to do this, but I'm 66 now and I feel ya," he says in his speech.

1999: Iron Maiden announced that singer Bruce Dickinson & guitarist Adrian Smith would be rejoining the band for a reunion tour & a new album. Both Dickinson & Smith are still in Iron Maiden to this day.

1995: Seventeen years after its initial release, Heaven Tonight by Cheap Trick was certified platinum by the RIAA for sales of one million copies.

1990: Aerosmith peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with “Janie’s Got a Gun” which was their fifth top ten single in the U.S.

1990: Eric Clapton performed the final night of his record setting 18 nights at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

1975: Dave Alexander, bassist for The Stooges died of pulmonary edema at a hospital in Ann Arbor, MI. He was 27 years old.

1970: ZZ Top performed their first concert in Beaumont, TX.

2012, Whitney Houston was found dead in suite 434 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, submerged in the bathtub. Beverly Hills paramedics arrived at approximately 3:30 p.m. and found the singer unresponsive and performed CPR. Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. Local police said there were "no obvious signs of criminal intent." It was later ruled by the coroner to have been an "accidental drowning"
