I love em' and Eddie is/was a great player but i have to say Van Halen. First album is amazing but a little unreal in my opinion. Ted Templeman is a studio wizard so lots of verb on VH 1....Van Halen 2, WACF, Diver Down although great for us guitar players, they are not that memorable.Fair warning and 1984 are probably their best out of all of them.

Sammy did the band good because he was more capable vocally and his management that came on board kept eddie and alex in line, BUT....that era is not that memorable either. Its so , well, 80's.

For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge was decent but the production was hollow, Eddies guitar sound was buzzy, and it is also dated. Right Now makes me cringe. Remember the clear pepsi campaign ? All i see is the saturday night live commercial mocking it with the clear gravy. The band also dived into that semi glam jock rock look...Mike with his polka dot shirts and Sam with the surfer look. Urghh.

After that it was trainwreck after trainwreck . Balance was ok. I like Amsterdam but that pro tooled- "yeah ! yeah ! yeah !" in the chorus ??? CHEEEEESE ! Did they even realize it was 1994 ?

After that ? Nothing great. 3 ? Don't remind me.

Yet the media and fans go nuts whenever one of them farts.CNN is always ready to say something about Van Halen Especially when Daves around. And how they did a sold out tour with Sam then Dave with Eddies problems/poor playing and firing mike....they suck now in my opinion but people still rave about them.

I would call them a tragic success story at best. :peek

I have to jump in on this thread and stick up a little bit more for Radiohead also. I like Radiohead not just because I think they are technically skilled musicians, but superior songwriters. All because a guitarist can shred a million miles an hour doesn't mean he is "the best." It all depends on what your criteria are, and as far as I know, there are no uniform criteria for any area of musical evaluation.
Radiohead creates layered music that is creative and intricate, and I have to disagree with an above statement that CNumb's bands are all more "complex" in some way to Radiohead. Radiohead keeps putting out new, interesting, and fresh albums with every release. I just want to know how exploring new ways of writing songs, writing good lyrics, and performing them at a high level with musical intelligence equates to over-rated. All because you don't like them doesn't mean that they don't deserve the praise they are given.

I know I'm probably gonna get all sorts of rotten fruit thrown at me but...

Jimi Hendrix - He's okay but I've heard better guitarists IMHO.

AC/DC - I liked some of their songs with Bon Scott but for some reason I can't stand Brian Johnson's voice. I won't deny that Angus Young is very talented but one major complaint I have about this band is that all their stuff sounds the same.

The Beatles - I'm not going to deny the fantastic songwriting skills of Lennon/McCartney and I like some of their stuff but I'm just not a huge fan and I agree with Death on Credit's statement about their status. I think that they get way too much credit. Plus as musicians IMO they're average at best. Maybe I need to listen to more of their stuff to really get it.

The Beach Boys - I never, ever understood the appeal of this band. My husband is a big fan. To me their stuff sounds like nothing more than just surf rock. Maybe I don't see their message.

For me it is Zeppelin. I like plenty of their songs, especially off the first 2 albums, but they also made crap just like any band. My beef is with the media who make it sound as if LZ were beamed in from Planet X to disperse an absolutely impeccable string of albums, track after track of pure perfection, on the hapless rock starved beings of Earth. One of the best bands ever, and very influential, but not perfect.

Also must mention Janis Joplin. I really don't understand the fascination. JJ sounds like she has been doused with gasoline, set alight, and is screaming for help...and yet more often than not is rated as the #1 female rock singer. I can understand the argument for Benatar, Harry, Hynde, Slick, whoever..just not Janis.

For me The Beatles, no contest.

I just have enough of all those "how amazing they are" and "everything they made was first and best". I can count lots of bands that are better than them.

Black Country Communion - The press was fantastic and I really wanted tro like it....the first album was over hyped, promised the earth and delivered very little.

Not looking forward to the follow up either - even more diminishing returns!
