I was surprised by how much I liked this album, I read a little background info while it was downloading, I need another trip to the record store already by the way
anyways, while it was downlaoding I read up on the Diodes a bit, and they were surprisingly hard to find info on, but they were described as a typical '77 punk rock band, they started in Canada in 1976, they released four albums and a greatest hits collection. I am reviewing their fourth album, Survivors released in 1982... they were described as a bit of a rip off of The Ramones, but I'm hearing something very different and cool... with maybe a bit of influence from them1. Survivors - the intro is pretty lame and boring, but I don't know anyone who turns a song off after 13 seconds, the voice jumps in and it's not really wonderful or something I hadn't heard before, but it's good enough, not something I wouldn't listen to.... so far the song is cool enough to keep the album on - 4/10
2. When I was Young - This song starts off a lot better, the song sounds fresh, and it is pretty cool, it sounds like a nice mix of Pretenders and Buzzcocks or something - 7/10
3. Hot Sands - starts off pretty fast and sounds really cool, it is pretty heavy, I can sort of hear a resemblance to Joey Ramone's voice, but the music isn't the same, I would never say they ripped off the band, This song is pretty cool, they don't play all that fast, but they have a lot of energy - 9/10
4. Heat Or the Beat - This song starts off almost psychedelic like, I was a bit shocked at the intro, but then it jumps into some power chords, then slows down a bit and the words start and it's a pretty creepy sounding tune, there is a lot of simplicity going on in this song, as simple as it is there is a lot of it going on, its a cool song, not my favorite on the album, but pretty cool - 7/10
5. Lost In The Dark - This one is a bit poppier than the rest of the album, it's pretty cool, so far the album isn't as great as some others, but it's good music to have on while I'm doing something, I'd crank it in the car... I'll put it that way, but this song is pretty repetitive and almost boring - 5/10
6. Burn Down Your Daddy's House - another poppy song, its a little slow for punk rock lol, but it has an awesome title... this song sounds almost like REM, it's pretty cool with a great title, it's a simple song, catchy and cool, I like it - 8/10
7. Curiosity Girl - I can definitely hear The Ramones on this tune, but it's not bad or anything, it's a simple fast punk rock song, once again, a bit boring, but I like it, the song has a turnaround and changes a little over halfway through then jumps into a nice solo, I really liked that - 10/10
8. Roses and Thorns - This one starts off like a combination of everything on the album so far, the creepy tune the poppy tunes and the punk rock tunes, this one is really well done, I think this one is my favorite on the album - 10/10
9. Coma - this song almost put me in a coma I think... I accidentally turned the wheel that controls the volume on my laptop when I shifted... song starts off with feedback, scared the hell out of me
back to the song after I recovered... its a cool punk rock song, nothing more really, this one sounds really raw - 6/1010. Play With Fire - This one sounds like they were drinking throughout the rest of the recording that day and it caught up to them and ends the album at a lowpoint, this song sounds really sloppy to me.... it is the longest on the track, it's basically just chaos, may be a very cool thing to hear live, but not on record - 3/10
Overall a cool album, as I said before not my favorite, but it's definitely a good one to have listened to
6/10 for me, the rating seems harsh because the album really isn't bad at all, but it is fairly average
