I like the Animals too and I've seen Eric Burdon 3 times in the past three years .. Unfortunately, he (unlike Colin Blunstone of the Zombies) hasn't held up ... Burdon's voice is not what it used to be and he doesn't seem to be enjoying himself on stage.

The last time that I saw Eric Burdon was at HippieFest 2008 and he was better than the previous summer at a blues festival and previous to that in February 2006 at a Casino venue.

That's a pity cause I saw some footage of Eric Burdon doing a tour here earlier this centary which showed Burdon in fine form. Before I left the other forum a mate there was nice enough to send me some YouTube footage of Eric Burdon in the late 90s performing which was also great. The friend who passed this stuff to me was a guy who was featured on the video playing harmonica alongside Burdon.

I think the thing to remember about Eric Burdon though is while there's a Rock element in his music, Blues has also inspired him - you can tell cause the really early Animals material is just that great Blues songs, and to me the Blues is about performing and producing something which is satisifying for the soul, unfortunately everyone's voice changes with age or performing to the standard they did in the 60s only gets harder when people get older. Though nothing could be worse than watching Joe Cocker trying to sing With a Little Help From My Friends Live at the Palace (whatever year that happened) cause he looked as if he was in constant pain! :bonk:

Those are interesting images I never knew they were comparing themselves to The Beatles!
Personally I don't think they had the right to compare themselves to the Beatles....

What makes you think that it was anyone associated with the Dave Clark Five that published these magazines? They were actually published by syndicates with cover blurbs that would appeal to teen buyers. The two bands were thought to be quite comparable since it was these two British Invasion bands which had the most hits/record sales in North America from 1964 through to the first part of 1965.

:wtf:

I don't, cause I've heard all sorts of musical guru's all the time bragging on about what's gonna be the next big thing - and most of the time their wrong!

Personally I'm just trying to put into context as to what The Beatles music was doing since they began and where it was at in 1965. To me it was upbeat with some Rock 'n' Roll influence to it. Dave Clark Five had a more pop beat to their music, I would have put them in the realms of The Searchers, Herman's Hermits, The Hollies, Gerry & The Pacemakers.

The Beatles might have been responsible for bringing Peter & Gordon into the picture which perhaps acts as a front for The Beatles and to that extent brought out lots of hits in the Pop frame of things that way - so more credit to The Beatles in that regard! :) Though personally I think they only did that so they would stand out amongst the British Invasion - cause there was lots of groups coming out then and all of those groups I mention had hits coming in.

In late '64, early '65, the Beatles were not the legend they became. Their audience was still made up of primarily, young teens. It wasn't until Revolver and Rubber Soul that they began to appeal to a broader audience. Part of what happened is that they, and their audience grew up together.

In the beginning, their place in musical history was by no means assured. the DC5 was a legitimate threat to the Beatles as long as they just wanted to hold some girls hand. When the music moved beyond puppy love lyrics, the DC5 was left behind.

...I would have put them in the relms of Gary Puckett and the Union Gap or The Vogues....

The Union Gap didn't have its first hit, "Woman, Woman", until very late 1967 which was well after the Dave Clark Five had peaked in popularity. And while the Vogues were more direct contemporaries of the Dave Clark Five, they were a vocal only singing group.

That is correct. While most classic rock fans these days would be more inclined to compare the Dave Clark Five to the Searchers, Herman's Hermits, the Hollies or Gerry & the Pacemakers, the Dave Clark Five were in early 1965 much closer to the Beatles in popularity than were any of those bands. In fact, I recall a call in poll at CHLO, which at the time was the favourite radio station of teens in my neck of the woods, in which the Beatles defeated the Dave Clark Five by a margin of less than two to one.

Sorry I wasn't implying the Dave Clark 5 got their sound from those groups, I was merely saying they sound like them - if anything GPATUG were influenced by DC5 and likewise The Vogues as well. Another band which I guess you could compare to the DC5 is The Bachelors which have been going since 1957! I personally don't know if they were influenced from them or not, though they were one of the early groups brining in harmony and pop.

There was also a Beatles/Four Seasons release at the heigth of Beatlemania. Beatles on one side, Four Seasons on the other. It's an expensive collector's item today.

Here is a pretty cool cover of DC5's "Glad All Over", it is just a bit more "rocked up" than the original.

I usually dont tread into the 1960's music too often, Bucky, but stumbled upon that one and couldn't resist the urge to pass it on :)

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't Glad All Over DC5's first big hit?
