The "Comeback" album....
You know the situation when a band returns after a few years in the wilderness with a belter of an album.
Some big name bands come to mind Black Sabbath returned to the fold with the excellent "Heaven and Hell" album with Ronnie James Dio on vocals.
Deep Purple got back together with "Perfect strangers" album....great stuff well worth the wait......Aerosmith "Done with mirrors" etc
On the other side some albums fall flat....GunsnRoses come to mind IMO
So what are your favourites / dissapointments ? :grinthumb

What about Permanent Vacation?

I think " Done with Mirrors" was really supposed to be Aerosmith's big comeback album with everbody back in the band, but there is no doubt that "Permanent Vacation" was the start of their real comeback.

2 of 3 albums I was disappointed in came after a lengthy gap between albums. The new Morbid Angel was 8 years after Heretic, a week after I saw them live I heard the album and thought not even Guns n Roses fell this flat, worse scale album than Chinese Democracy as dire an album as that was(liked a couple of songs off it). Lot of hype for a comeback album like that only for it to be the worst hunk of crap released by a metal band since St Anger.

Ac/dc came back quite nicely with Black Ice, that was originally supposed to come out 4 years earlier actually. Van Halens recent album is a pretty good return for them.

For me in the metal side of things Autopsy returning with a great death metal album after a decade I think without an album. Agreed with the OP about Sabbath and Deep Purple, those albums are pearlers. Accept Blood of the Nations was also a brilliant return, sure with a somewhat different line up but it was Accept nonetheless. Anthrax Worship Music another long time album I was initially disappointed with but that one grew on me.

I am always sceptical and cautious when it comes to albums that were a really long time after their previous.

After "Jinx" and a five year gap Rory released the "Defender" album in 1987.

Judging by the incredible reaction of the crowd in the Rock City at the time this release was long overdue and Rory was on great form.

The Allman Brothers had a decent comback album. Brothers and Sisters came after Duane Allman & Berry Oakley were killed.

Not everybody's cup of tea, but Crazy Horse finally returned after 15 years with Americana and it's one of my favorite albums ever!

Even worse than Axl's delay with Chinese Democracy was the Eagles "Long Road Out of Eden", a double album released 13 years after Hell Freezes Over, which I don't count because it was a compilation album more than new music. Unlike Chinese Democracy this album was very well done, they didn't step outside their comfort zone and gave us what we expect from an iconic 70's band.

When I did a little digging it was 28 years since their last studio album The Long Run until "...Eden", talk about a hiatus.:heheh:

28 years for THE EAGLES comeback album....:omg: Im shocked
I had to wait 20 years for my favourite band ANGEL to release an album. The last studio one was the masterpiece "Sinful " in 1979.
In 1999 the band released "In the beginning ". Hmm not quite the rock album to bring ANGEL back into the spotlight.....more as the title suggests ,songs with Led Zeppelin influences.Drummer Barry Brandt is outstanding with some drumming sessions Bonham would have been proud of. Greg Giuffria former ANGEL keyboard is not involved at all with this album and is greatly missed.
Heres hoping for another ANGEL comeback......probably in another 20 years grrrr :heheh: :bonk:
