Eleanor Rigby.
I love the song, never leaves my top 5 or so of Beatles favorites.
I don't think it's a 'pop' song at all. From where I sit, it's the antithesis of a 'pop' song.
Pop songs, more often than not, at their core, have guitars, bass & drums. Keyboards and horns aren't always there, but they fit as well.
Eleanor Rigby has no drums, no guitars, no bass, no horns no keyboards, etc, etc.
It has two cellos, four violins, and two violas. It's a composition.
Don't find that much on the top 40 countdowns.
Here it is without the lyrics:
It's beautiful. The underlying desperation can be heard & felt, even without the lyrics.
To me, it's not pop. Or poppy. It's sad and isolated and withdrawn people, just tryng to face their own life on a daily basis. Some make it through the day, some don't.
