Hi Wyman!
You were asking about my favorite Beatles songs.Usually,it is so difficult for me to narrow things down to my faves because they did so many things on so many levels I stop trying.Firstly, titles released as singles naturally tend get favor here while many album tracks such as "I'm Looking Through You" from "Rubber Soul","Fixing a Hole" from "Pepper" and John Lennon's gorgeous "Because" from their final effort "Abbey Road" are quite often swept under the rug of the magnificence of major chart hits such as "Hey Jude","I Want To Hold Your Hand","Let It Be","Help!" and so many others. The White Album was actually originally ALL album tracks until "Ob-La-Di-Ob-La-Da" was released as single circa 1977(it mangaged to crack the upper half of the Billboard Hot 100).This,"Back in the USSR" "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Birthday" and perhaps a couple of others could have easily been great singles. With the bias toward hit singles that still receive major oldies radio airplay in mind,I tend to lean towards tunes like "Let It Be","Help!" "Strawberry Fields" and "I Am the Walrus",which may have been B-side to "Hello Goodbye",but up until late 1969,Billboard was awarding chart positions to flips and while "Hello" peaked at No1,"Walrus" as it's alternate side managed to climb up to #56 and I'm sure it still is fairly popular on classic rock stations. And let us NEVER forget the one that really fueled the flames of Beatlemania,"I Want To Hold Your Hand" which is definitely one of the top three most important rock singles ever, perhaps along with "Like A Rolling Stone" and either "Rock Around the Clock" or the Stones' immortal "Satisfaction".Perhaps two of the top three are highly variable, but "Hand" absolutely belongs no lower than third. This was the particular Lennon/McCartney fave that raised the bar on songwriting quite considerably.I've always adored George Harrison's "Within You,Without You",his musical foray into his high Hindu beliefs as well both of his "Abbey Road contributions,"Something" and "Here Comes the Sun".I also have a bit of preference for "Eleanor Rigby" and,of ALL songs, the wonderful novelty we all know as "Yellow Submarine"(why not?).Decisions,decisions.I could go on and on and on with so much more material ad infinitum so I'll just stop right here. What are some of YOUR favorites?
