^^Looks nice George, never heard of TCC before though and certainly never seen one either. Doesn't have to be big to be good, my GS is small which is nice cause it makes placing it really easy.

Hope you like it.

Thanks Bruce. We met up this morning prior to me going to work. It is not a big unit but it is not flimsy either. It does have some weight to it. I have some nice Outlaw interconnects that will pair up nicely with it...at least aesthetically.

I snagged a slew of them when they offered a heavy discount a few years back. Actually, they were celebrating the last Patriot Super Bowl win as they are located in Easton, MA.

The box...

Messed with the rig last night...decided to forgo for now the phono section of the Onkyo for the TC-750. The Onkyo was leaner and a bit brighter in sound. The TC-750 on the hand had a thicker presentation but does not sacrifice the crucial microdynamics that vinyl is lauded for. I also switched interconnects with the Outlaw PCA's that have a larger core than the slender Taras.

The sonics are different. Whether I'd say it is better is too early to call as the TC-750 definitely isn't any worse. I have to add that it is totally "quiet" even if it is no signals are being sent.

^^You'll probably have to listen to a few more albums before you can quantify if you like it more than the Onkyo phono stage. I know my GS took about 50 hours to break in before it hit it's stride and it's different with you because the TC is already burned in. Sort of like changing cartridges they have different personalities.

Actually you are probably right about the burn in phase boss. I just got off the phone with my friend. He told me that he used it sparingly [estimated less than 30 hours] since he came across the ridiculously low price on the Jolida which that he could not pass up. At the time, it was an impulse stop gap buy for him but he really liked its capabilities.

Oh and his young daughter was happy with the Shacks. Even he approved it expecting less. Then again, it should easily beat those common duff black interconnects with the red and white ends that seem to come with any equipment bought.

As far as comparisons goes, the TC has more weight especially on the low end. Vocals have more body too. The Beatles LP I just listened to had McCartney's Hofner came across loud yet clean. It just had a larger soundstage I might add [at the risk of sounding like an overly serious audiophile]. It's just that there is some slight "fuzz" around the edges. The sonics sounds contained a bit looking to break loose. I agree with you that in due time it will "open" up. He also advised to keep it plugged in. It probably ran "cold" as I immediately used it after the set-up.

^^I have mine plugged into my Yamaha integrated amp, in the 'switched' outlet on the back panel so it's only running when I am playing it. I haven't thought about leaving it on all the time since after the 'burn in' period, but perhaps I should.

If your buddy is right then you have a few more hours to burn in your phono stage before it settles down and smooths out the sound. A labour of love for you George.

I've looked at Jolida, some of their kit is really well thought of but nobody here carries it and I prefer to buy stuff like that locally if possible. I'm assuming it's a tube design he bought?

Here it is matching the Outlaws [pardon the blur] from an overhead view...

TCCTC-750_zps6ff50c49.jpg

I put some weights on the front ends as the interconnects are heavy. Just for the heck of it, I dug out The Eagles "The Long Run" LP just to put it through its paces again. There is a marked difference this time after leaving it on overnight. Weird... The vocals aren't as recessed and imaging is more defined... It wasn't on the Onkyo's but it sounded a couple rows back. The low end is unreal though. Kick drums and bass guitars roll out without missing a note. Sustains on the electrics "hang" a couple of hairs longer. Sonics are more upfront this time but not necessarily just loud. Even the crackles are toned down without those "sharp" pings that I hear. Vinyl rumble isn't as loud either.

My friend's Jolida is a tube phonostage the JD9 to be exact. Very liquid and supple sounding very round with no glaring edges. It was a showpiece at the C.E.S. Convention in Lost Wages, NV a couple of years back. It was sold to him for a third of it's retail price.

It is a smart idea to hook up your phonostage to your integrated's outlet as I assume it doesn't draw much current. I just ran out of outlets on my conditioners. I wish it wasn't a walwart power cord but you can't have everything at its price point. Always cool to come across gems like it without having to listen to the usual "sales" spiel.

A relative isn't thrilled with his Marantz AV8003 processor and asked if I want to swap with my Onkyo. His wife and kids are at their wits end trying to figure out the remote as in plural. He really wants my Onkyo given its simplicity and flexibility plus the phono stage that he covets. Very, very tempted as the Marantz has better music "chops" IMO as I hardly watch flicks as much. It doesn't have a phono stage but that is where the TC-750 comes in.

^^Nice photo. That is what I noticed with my GS, it does a fabulous job bringing the music to life and reduces background noise too. When I play a new album like the Beatles Rubber Soul for example it's stunning and that recording is ancient.

Great deal your friend fell into, hope he enjoys years of musical ecstasy, but if it were me I'd already be ordering a replacement set of tubes. I have a spare set for my Tube amp, ready to go when I need them.:D

I have a Marantz SR 7005, it's amazing for movies but that's all I use it for and yeah the remote can be complicated the manual is massive but the sound is by far the best I've had for movies.

^It sounds very good even if not fully burned in. It should be there in six weeks of playbacks. :D Played four albums today and the smear isn't there anymore. It is tighter and with better focus on placement.

^^Sounds about right, it takes about 50 hours to break in a new cartridge before it settles into it's groove.;)

On another subject I was perusing Canuck Audio Mart a few days ago and stumbled across a want ad for a 'stand alone Yamaha processor', the guy sold his old Yamaha receiver and missed the sound programs so much he wanted to fill the gap. I happen to own the flagship DSP they made and it's sitting in a box for the last few years, I answered his ad and we began a discussion. He asked for pictures so I took a few, then ran the DSP through it's paces and it looks and works as good as the day I bought it. Anyway I have the manual, remote, original box and the sales receipt, I keep everything when it comes to equipment makes moving it so much easier than if you throw out the boxes.

So he was interested, looked up the info on the DSP online and asked me to name a price, so I thought about it for a day and came up with a figure that was more than fair. And these are beyond rare, I've only seen one listed for sale in over ten years of surfing audio boards. In today's money it would be worth about $3000 brand new, it's also made in Japan not China. Anyway after I settled on a price he asked me to pay shipping/insurance/Paypal fees, which considering the money we're talking about was about 20% of the entire transaction. Being generous I told him I would split the cost down the middle that seemed more than fair to me, after all if it was $1000+ I would pay the shipping fees and everything else without complaint. He answered by telling me he changed his mind, that he would need another amp to drive the speakers.:nw: He would have known that if he did read the online manual you need power for 2/4 front channels and for the rear channels. You can run the main/effect through one pair of speakers for the front end, I've done that for years and it sounded excellent.

One thing I hate about doing business on Kijiji, ebay, CAM and other online sites are lowballers. They are always looking for an angle and you end up wasting your time with them. I won't be answering anyone's ad like that anytime soon.

On the bright side now that I've unpacked my old DSP I'll hook it up and listen to my Classical again, the theater programs put you right in the middle of the orchestra.:mn:
