A Ted Nugent concert planned for Aug. 4 at the Coeur d’Alene Casino in Worley, Idaho has been cancelled, with the venue citing “Nugent’s history of racist and hate-filled remarks” as their reason for pulling the plug on the show.
The casino broke the news in a Facebook post addressed to “Dear Valued Fans,” offering refunds to ticket buyers and quoting Chief Allen, chairman of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, as saying their organization “has always been about human rights — for decades, we have worked individually and as a Tribe to make sure that each and every person is treated equally and with respect and dignity. We know what it’s like to be the target of hateful messages and we would never want perpetuate hate in any way.” [It should be noted that this statement doesn't cite any specific examples to support their characterization of Mr. Nugent.]
“We adamantly do not want our casino to be used as a venue for the racist attitudes and views that Ted Nugent espouses. Unfortunately, when we booked him, we were looking at him from an entertainment perspective, as an ’80s rock ‘n’ roller who we thought folks might enjoy,” added Laura Stensgar, Executive Director of Marketing for the casino. “We take the comments and concerns of our community very seriously and we apologize to anyone who was offended by the idea that we would promote these kinds of attitudes. We will do our best to avoid such mistakes moving forward.”
Nugent hasn’t commented directly on the cancellation, but in a lengthy Facebook post of his own, he recently railed against the “America hating commie left Saul Alinsky-Joseph Goebbells liberal democrat punks” who have “dedicated an entire army to abandon their own lives to unite to destroy mine.”
Arguing that this so-called anti-Nugent network “proves beyond any shadow of any doubt how incredibly effective I am at spotlighting these freedom hating cockroaches & impeding their fundamental transformation ie;destruction of America [sic],” he concluded with an anus-filled rant that argued, “If you’re not ****** off the a–holes, you’re an a–hole. Clearly, I am no a–hole, for my vaportrail is strewn with the ruined lives of untold a–holes & I couldn’t be more proud! Sometimes ya give the world the best ya got & ya get kicked in the teeth. I give the world the best I got anyway, everyday, nonstop! ThankU Lord! I am Your soldier for good over evil & I’m winning! KillerCOOL or what!! Godspeed truth warriors all!”
Reaction to the cancellation has fallen predictably along political lines, but if there’s a silver lining to Nugent’s latest controversy, it’s that it’s apparently inspired him to name-check a list of his musical heroes via a series of tweets — and the more people paying tribute to James Brown, Wilson Pickett, and Motown’s Funk Brothers, the better.
