To me Ritchie Blackmore was the fastest guitar player of that time. I say was, there are other fast guitarists now, but they are more based on how to play technically perfect and I hate that technique.

Those guys aren't shredders as I understand the term but it's not like I really care so what the hell. Yes, I suppose there are some good 'shredders' out there.

I dont like that ultra fast tasteless tosh! - I prefer guitarists that can make it sing with one note!

My faves are...

Doug Aldrich - John Sykes - Dan Huff - Steve Lukather - John Norum - George Lynch - Warren DeMartini - Michael Schenker - Gary Moore - Blues Saraceno - Neil Zaza - Jake E. Lee - Randy Rhoads - Zakk Wylde - Dimebag Darrell - Alex Skolnick - Steve Vai & Neal Schon...

Rik Emmett should have made that list. IMO he is way underrated

I agree GG, he played an amazing solo when I saw Triumph on their "Just a Game" support tour.

He toured here last winter playing small clubs doing nothing but Eric Clapton covers, nice to know he's still playing.

When it comes to sheer ability with a guitar, acoustic or electric Al Di Meola has to be on any list, he can play fast or slow with style. When I first heard "Elegant Gypsy" decades ago, my jaw literally dropped.

Al DiMeola must be the benchmark for the speed : feel ratio. But, as much as I like jazz-rock, I can only take so much, whereas I could listen to the blues-rock guitarists all day.

Jimi Hendrix is officially considered in america the 7th Fastest, and in the UK they consider him the 9th fastest of all time. If you have seen videos of him or, if you're ancient, you can see how he just throws himself into every note, with amazing accuracy and incredible, almost impossible speed. Its one thing to shred with intense speed, its quite another to create and make fast music tangible to an audience. Trey Azagthoth is guinness world record holder for 2011 though :)

I had a thing for Steve Vai's guitar playing for awhile.

I first saw him in the movie Crossroads wondered who the heck is that but assumed it was some actor miming. (Back then you couldn't jump onto the Internet and IMDB and immediately find all the info you wanted.) Then later I found out he was an actual musician and was in David Lee Roth's band. I got a few of his solo albums and liked them ok but somewhere along the way I lost interest in his guitar playing. I guess partly I outgrew him and honestly I realized I didn't sense a lot of feeling in his playing ... too cold and technical.

I never expected to see Glen Campbell on a "shredders" list. I didn't realize he is that fast..........but he sure can pick a country tune or two ;)

Here is some footage of him fast pickin' and talking about him and Jerry Reed Shreading:
