Steely Dan Announce Massive 2013 Tour

Remember when Steely Dan rarely hit the road? Not anymore. After performing strictly as a studio band from 1975 through their initial breakup in 1980, the group led by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker is now set for its sixth tour since 2006.

Steely Dan announced plans today for more than four dozen stops this year in North America. The “Mood Swings: 8 Miles To Pancake Day Tour” begins in July at New Jersey and continues through September in Connecticut.

Fagen and Brecker will be joined by guitarist Jon Herington, keyboardist Jim Beard, drummer Keith Carlock and bassist Freddie Washington — the same band, minus Carlock, that Fagen toured with last summer as part of the Dukes of September with Boz Scaggs and Michael McDonald.

Fagen has since issued ‘Sunken Condos,’ his fourth album away from Steely Dan. His most recent group project with Brecker was 2003′s ‘Everything Must Go.’ Steely Dan won a Grammy for album of the year with 2000′s ‘Two Against Nature,’ then were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a year later.

The band regularly performed in concert from 1972-74, but then didn’t tour again until Fagen and Brecker reunited for a 1994 concert series. Since, they’ve played shows in 1996, 2000, 2003, 2006-09 and then in 2011, according to Steely Dan’s web site.

Messrs. Fagen and Becker have always delighted me with their far reaching musical explorations.Extremely breezy and highly competent jazz rock.I like it.

Steely Dan Working on New Album

They remain as dedicated as ever to working at their own determined pace, but Walter Becker and Donald Fagen — otherwise known as Steely Dan — sound like they might be getting ready to end their latest long gap between studio releases.

Billboard reports that the duo recently hosted a conference call with reporters, during which they teased the eventual release of a follow-up to their last LP, 2003′s ‘Everything Must Go.’ “It’s in the air, it really is,” promised Becker. “It’s just a smell now. The next thing is then you taste it, then you start to feel it. You know how this goes.”

Fagen added that they have “some songs, these really good ones that we only half-finished back in, like, 1984 that we keep threatening to work on,” with Becker further explaining that “we did finish a couple of those. We have a bunch of things. Put it this way — any other band in the world would have finished or mixed these old things that were lying around and issued them with a great ta-da fanfare. But we just don’t. We don’t play it like that, necessarily. It’s not the way we roll.”

For the next several months, the band will be rolling on the road; as we previously reported, Steely Dan have lined up an ambitious series of tour dates that will keep them playing to crowds through October — some of which will include complete performances of classic LPs such as ‘Aja’ and ‘The Royal Scam.’ Tantalizing as that prospect might be for longtime fans, it’ll come at the expense of new music for the time being.

“I have a really hard time writing on the road,” explained Fagen, whose most recent solo album, ‘Sunken Condos,’ was released in 2012. “Usually writing is done, whether with Walter or not, it’s when I’m really at home and have very little to do. You need to be in a kind of stasis, I think, to do that … or else you’re just sleeping. Actually, the time you could be writing songs you’re probably sleeping, on the road.”

^^Bought that the week it came out, is it really 36 years already...

I think Steely Dan will always be the ultimate 'studio band' for my money. They rarely toured at all during their early years and spent endless hours rewriting/recording their songs until they felt it was just right but I'm sure that process of being perfectionists was one reason they didn't tour much, after being together that long fighting/collaborating in the studio Becker and Fagen were undoubtedly sick of each other without actually going on the road to support a new album.:heheh:

I am loving this band, have recently purchased some of their albums on remastered CD and will probably get some more in the next few weeks, I really need to listen to their later albums and see if they are worth picking up as I have neglected those albums.
