Here's another song that qualifies...Neil Young's "T-Bone" from Re Ac Tor. I bought this album because of Union Pacific which I really liked, but when I listen to 9 minutes of T-Bone I wondered if Neil was drunk or stoned when he wrote it. Probably his worst song, at least to me it will always rank as complete filler.
The riff isn't so bad at first but the monotonous lyrics and repetitive music really wear out fast for me.
I think I'll revitalise this thread with a few songs that spring to my mind from some well known albums:
Four Sticks (Led Zeppelin, IV)
This track seems to generally be regarded as the weakest on Zoso/IV, but I really love the main riff - to me, it sounds like a heavy vehicle or object moving slowly and deliberately before stopping suddenly. I like the acoustic guitar parts as well - the combination of this and the use of synth remind a little of 'Welcome To The Machine' in places even though it was recorded four years earlier.
San Tropez (Pink Floyd, Meddle)
This is by no means one of the best Pink Floyd songs, and it's not as good as the first three tracks on side one, but it's far from being the worst - it has a pleasant atmosphere, a very nice jazz piano solo and is very enjoyable to listen to on a sunny day. I certainly don't think it deserves to be put in the same boat as 'Seamus', musically I find it to be far superior.
Teenage Jail (Eagles, The Long Run)
I mentioned my views on this song in the Eagles thread, but I'll repeat them here - I love the rather dark sense of humour of this track and the deliberately melodramatic mood created by the lyrics and music. The combination of Don Henley and Glenn Frey's vocals on the final verse is great, and Don Felder's guitar solo is totally over the top but perfect for the track!
A Whisper (Coldplay, A Rush Of Blood To The Head)
Many Coldplay fans absolutely hate this song, but I've always liked it quite a lot, it's intense and shows a different side of the band (there were no songs like this on Parachutes). I'd take it over the songs I've heard from the new album (and most of Mylo Xyloto) for sure.
