It's not a super sparse drum kit, but one of my favorite motifs. It's Nick Mason's from the mid 70's. And I don't think one could find a more understated drummer. (or underrated for that matter)

I remember the drummer for Huey Lewis and the News having a pretty simple kit.

Simon Kirke had a simple kit and still does. He also isn't a flashy drummer by any means but it's what he doesn't do that is amazing. Love his spacing in his playing especially with Free.

^ Simon Kirke is an excellent drummer - I had the pleasure of seeing him with Ringo's All Star Band - he even sang a few Bad Company/Free tunes! :grinthumb

Anyway, just because a drummer has a big drum kit - it doesn't make him automatically a great drummer, imo.

Some drummers can't play simple drum beats, because they feel the need to go crazy all the time.

I've never really paid much mind to the kit used by Phil Rudd in AC/DC, though IIRC their replacement drummers in the 80's and 90's had pretty big kits in the music videos.

However, Rudd tends to keep things pretty simple on record, at least as far as what he does with his kit.

I remember reading a review for Stiff Upper Lip in which the publication said that every single song had the very same drum beat and the reviewer openly wondered (sarcastically) whether Rudd came into the studio, recorded himself playing drums for a couple of minutes and then AC/DC simply took that recording and put it on an endless loop for the duration of the record.
