IMO, there is a big difference in screaming and growling. That low gutteral growling vocal, and yes they are speaking in growls, that I cant understand is what I dont care much for. A tastefully done growl as an accent to the music is acceptable. Bullet for my Valentine uses tasteful growling, IMO.

Screams can be overdone, too. I dont like to listen to an entire song where the vocalist is screaming at me! Which is probably why I never liked Little Richard that much, he takes screams to the exreme. That to me is not what a vocal talent is all about. But screams can be fantastic in songs, like the song "Psycho" by the Sonics. And another good screamer is Roger Daltry in "Wont Get Fooled Again".

I like everything in balance! It's just like profanity! When someone drops the f bomb in every line it's gratuitous and wasteful but when they really think about the song and think about it's placement then it really works and actually adds to the song. Same for screaming and growling for me.

My favorite example of balancing this FOR ME is the following where the ugly vocals are balanced with some almost angelic vocals and it just comes off as an epic story! The dramatic and orchestral qualities of the music itself also aid in tempering the lunacy of the growling vocalist!

the music in that song starts off very beautiful, but you lose me with the vocals. I am sorry, Bry, but I just haven't been able to ever wrap my ears around much growling.

I agree, though, that the orchestration of the song, which also moves to a crescendo when the vocalist is at the peak of growling, has a big motivation to the feeling of the song. I guess this music is something I just haven't been able to gain a major understanding of. These doom/death bands tend to have very long songs, and I haven't been able to sit through 6-9 minutes of growls and dark depressing music.

I hear you, some people can listen to Gothic/Doom bands all day long, but I have to be in a particularly deep and dark mood to really enjoy listening to it. Moonspell was a band that I found, that has that dark vibe to it, that I really enjoy, even when I'm happy

The flip side to this story is, I do like some gothic metal bands. This music doesn't seem to take the growls, squeals, and screams to any sort of extreme. Plus I like the melodic, ambient, ballad-like quality of the music. This music doesn't seem depressing, it is more mysterious than anything.

This song is a very slow, melodic with harmonies of a male/female duet

This song is more symphonic power metal, excellent stuff!

Re: Sreaming & Growling metal

screams & growls are ok if tastefully done. I like Bullet for my Valentine, they have some tasteful growling & screaming:

Watching Us Die Tonight

Take It Out On Me

I like this album in general (Scream Aim Fire):

Magic, you amaze me with your taste in music. I would have never thought you would like BFMV. They have one of the best sounds recently.

Thank you , Shaggy! My taste is very eclectic. When I first met LG, I never thought that some of the music I listened to was "heavy" anything, but he educated me differently :lmao:

When there is a certain "sound" you like in music, the genre classification really means nothing. I will listen to almost anything atleast once. I just know from giving the death/doom metal quite a few listens, that I dont care for the vocals, or the speed/shredding guitars. Shredders are a dime a dozen these days, and it really doesn't impress me.

What does impress me is a well composed piece of music, that is backed with good production, and a "harmony" with the band and vocalist.

Where my heart is
Everyone here who knows me knows I like some screaming and growling.

The only thing that I can't stand so much are pig squeals.

I can understand when it comes to shit such as this

But how about the here and there pig squeals? They can be well-placed instead of having the gutturalness throughout. It's part of what grind is about. Pornogrind, deathgrind, goregrind, not talking anything with the word core or breakdown in it.

One of the best examples of growling vs. angelic voice is Theatre Of Tragedy, the old albums with Liv Kristine:

Clean vocals and growls by the same great vocalist, Christian Älvestam from Scar Symmetry a Swedish melodic death metal band. After he left the band, they hired two vocalists to replace him:D.

Girls can scream and growl too:grinthumb

Sabina Classen from Holy Moses
