Soot and Stars
I AM SOOT!
Sarah McLachlan
As most of you guys must have noticed, I do a lot of threads on female artist! So this thread should be no surprise! I mean I had to get to Sarah McLachlan at some point. Out of all the artist in the solo female singer songwriter category from the 90's on she's definitely the queen as far as mass appeal. She not only has that faithful cult audience that some of these do but she can add the mainstream audience to that as well. It doesn't matter if it's teenagers, soccer moms, metal heads, new age hippies, etc. just about every type of listener has laid claim to listening to Sarah McLachlan.
Out of all the artist Sarah has mastered that angelic ethereal quality in her sound that makes her emotions grand enough for some audiences while being mellow enough for others. For example, I remember hearing Sarah for the first time with Hold On for the first time on the
No Alternative SDTRK
Hold On
and feeling like it wasn't out of place at all in the middle of the hard rock Grunge/Alternative bands at the time!
For me, I buy what I can from her but I'm hit or miss with her. I don't get into her pre-Fumbling Towards Ecstasy stuff and Afterglow kind of lost me! When Sarah hits it though for me it's out of the park.
Here are my favs from Sarah:
Fumbling Towards Ecstacy
Possession (Piano Version)
(amazing)
Good Enough (Freedom Sessions Version)
Fumbling Towards Ecstacy
All the fear has left me now
Im not frightened anymore
Its my heart that pounds beneath my flesh
Its my mouth that pushes out this breath
And if I shed a tear I wont cage it
I wont fear love
And if I feel a rage I wont deny it
I wont fear love
Companion to our demons
They will dance, and we will play
With chairs, candles, and cloth
Making darkness in the day
It will be easy to look in or out
Upstream or down without a thought
And if I shed a tear I wont cage it
I wont fear love
And if I feel a rage I wont deny it
I wont fear love
Peace in the struggle
To find peace
Comfort on the way
To comfort
And if I shed a tear I wont cage it
I wont fear love
And if I feel a rage I wont deny it
I wont fear love
I wont fear love
I wont fear love...
