April 23, 1936 / December 6, 1988

On July 25th, 1960 Roy Orbison reached No.2 on the US singles chart with ‘Only the Lonely,’ his first hit. The song was turned down by The Everly Brothers and Elvis Presley, so Orbison decided to record the song himself.

Re: Roy Orbison

Been a fan of his for years. One of the true gentlemen in the music business and possessed one of the most distinctive voices you'll ever hear.

The best version of this song ever done, Van Halen's cover is amusing but not even close to Roy's performance.

Re: Roy Orbison

Roy ! Remember my dad listening to him on the 8 track player !:grinthumb:tongue:

In our Dodge Dart :heheh:

Seriously ,he was a common voice in my youth..Dad loved him. And went to see him in Rock N' Roll shows when I was growing up.

Dad wasn't too fond of 'my Beatles' as he called them at first..long hairs ! lol
But when he heard The Traveling Wills{Traveling Willburys} , well that helped change it all !

Suddenly he thought they weren't too bad..that group with his Roy and one of 'My Beatles'{Georgie}

I always liked Roy. A very cool unique voice..

Re: Roy Orbison

Agree with all of you - a legend. Very distinctive voice and that is what makes him - still - so special.

Re: Roy Orbison

Can't forget his role with The Traveling Wilbury's either, Lefty gave the group such a special touch.

This official video shows a picture of Roy as a child.
