Rory Gallagher (Official Thread)

I listen to Taste more than his solo lps the last few years....On The Boards has some prog and folk mixed in here and there...even some jazz fusion at times.
My favorite solo things are Irish Tour 74 , Tattoo, and Calling Card.

Calling Card is my favourite album by Rory. IMO, it was his finest studio package.

This set of songs here is from the original Taste Mk I ( 1966-1968 ) with Norman Damery on drums and Eric Kitteringham on bass and Rory on guitar, vocals and harmonica..The picture here is incorrect coz John Wilson and Richard 'Charlie McCracken were part of the more famous Taste Mk II ( 1968-1970 ) which recorded the 2 Taste albums,'Taste' and 'On the Boards.'..This Taste Mk I was really early Rory not long after he had finished up with the showbands and they were actually known as 'The Taste'...this material here is pretty straightforward blues but good nevertheless.

Around that mid/late 60s in Ireland it was Rory's Taste that were hitting the headlines but also there was this Northern Irish band that went by the name of 'Eire Apparent' that were playing blues but more of a kind of psychedelic blues...They only recorded one album and Jimi Hendrix played on that album and he produced it too...Eire Apparent helped launch the career of another famous Irish rock musician, Henry McCullough..Amazing to think that Rory never spoke to or met Hendrix,,,From what i have read, the only time Rory and Jimi ever came close to meeting was at some kind of music function in London and Rory was seated just a few tables away from Jimi, but Rory being the perfect gent that he was didn't want to disturb Jimi and was too polite, humble and shy...i believe later in life Rory regretted not getting up to go over and talk with Jimi...That was Rory down to a tee, off stage a perfect gent, modest, humble, down to earth and never indulged in the rock star lifestyle yet on stage he was a roaring Lion and an exceptional guitarist..The stage, and playing to a live audience, is where Rory truly came out of his shell and was able to express himself...

Some really really early Rory here when he was still in the showbands...He looks like the 5th Beatle here, lol...and that strat with a full coat of lacquer WOW!

Over here on this side of The Atlantic it has always been the likes of Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Brian May and Dave Gilmour that have always got the accolades as being the best British guitarists..This has often irked me, coz just across the Irish Sea we had Rory...For me Rory was better than ALL of them, and quite frankly i don't think any of them were even fit enough to restring Rory's guitar.
