Rory Gallagher (Official Thread)

All this political stuff surrounding Ed Sheeran currently about he hasn't come out and supported the Palestinian's cause and now Ed is being 'cancelled' by his support acts and even his own backing musician's in a north American tour makes me wonder what Rory would have made of this situation?. Rory was 'never' political and stayed 'neutral' when it came to the 'Northern Ireland question' during the 1970s & 1980s and who's side did he take when he was asked on a few occasions in interviews which is how I liked it. I wanted to hear his music and NOT his political views.
Ed should consider himself lucky for having the career he has. I've heard his music, and I still don't get why anyone wants to listen to it. When I was young, all a male singer had to have to make it in the music industry was looks and vocal ability. IMO, Ed has neither. Meanwhile, if his less than stellar career has been prematurely terminated due to his inability to understand what side of the political fence his fans are standing on, then that is also his problem.

Have yourself a wonderful day, E-Z, and thank you for being so generous with the Like Button

hi E-Z, there was a piece in Gerry McAvoys book 'Riding Shotgun' where he mentions Rory being on the same bill as Jethro Tull, i think it might have been over in the States somewhere and Ian Anderson was going on about the troubles in Northern Ireland and he said to Gerry, 'When are you guys gonna sort out all that trouble over there in Northern Ireland?' Gerry, who comes from Belfast, responded by saying, 'We are not political, we are just musicians wanting to play music.' But Anderson wouldn't let up and went into a bit of a rant about the troubles,. i have no idea if he was expecting an answer from Gerry but Gerry said that it got to the point where he was getting fed up with it all and said he felt like grabbing hold of Anderson's flute and ramming it up Anderson's ass, just to shut him up, lol.. BTW, i think i might have mentioned this elsewhere on the forum, a new book on Rory being published at the end of this month, the author of the book being Rory's brother Donal...Title of book is 'Edged in Blue, A Rock and Roll Odyssey with Rory Gallagher.'
Yeah BluesRocker I did read that myself in Gerry's book when it first came out over here in the UK some 20 odd years ago and regards to 'the troubles' in Northern Ireland with Rory being born a Catholic in 'the south' and living from childhood in Cork and then having a bass player in Gerry McAvoy and a drummer in Wilgar Campbell (Rod De-Ath Rory's drummer after Wilgar Campbell who was from Wales between 1972/73-1977) with both Gerry & Wilgar coming from Northern Ireland and both being protestants plus Rory also regarded Belfast has a 'second home' to be asked a 'stupid question' by some rock journalist about would he give his opinion on 'the troubles' in the north was a 'dumb question' to even ask Rory in the first place cos NO WAY would he tell anybody what he thought about the troubles in the north back in the 1970s & 1980s except probably to his brother Donal.

I'm sure that wasn't the first time someone wanted to ram Anderson's flute up his arse. He had a deserved reputation as a real arsehole.
That comment of yours Dizbuster X brought a smile to my rockstar face :)

With regards to Ed Sheeran I have never listened to the dude's music preferring to stick with Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, Johnny Winter and several other 'proper musicians' from the late 1960s & 1970s and personally I don't want to listen to a BUSKER with an acoustic guitar!!. This (Sunday) morning it has been reported on UK news channels that Ed finally gave into 'the mob' last night who wanted Ed's blood and he made a statement from the stage (via reading a Auto-Q it was believed?) basically saying that he was 'sorry guys' and the last week has been "The worse week of my life" but I suppose if he had 'pulled out' and cancelled the rest of the North American tour the guy would have been 'stung' by a MULTI-MILLION $$$$$$$-DOLLAR LAWSUIT OF BREACH OF CONTRACT(s) so the dude was in a no win situation all because a 'friend' of Eds stands at a mic on stage and says "FREE PALESTINE" what a joke. :(

No doubt you're correct. Record Companies are authoritaian in nature, and if Ed didn't know that by this point in his careeer, then he's dumber than he looks.

Rory in action possibly circa 1977 or 1978 I would guess?.

With regards to Ed Sheeran and to be fair to him Rory was around before the age of the dreaded 'social media' so I guess it is feasible that Rory may have suffered a similar situation of a social media campaign by the masses if it had been around with them wanting him to declare that he agreed with the FREE PALESTINE mob although having said that I would guess that most Rory Gallagher fan's would be more into his music and rock music in general rather than bringing politics to a Gallagher concert.

Rory died just as the 'internet age' was starting back in 1995 (it was also referred to back then as "The information superhighway" remember?) and before the 'smartphone' revolution of the 2010s where large groups of people can be motivated to act in just a few hours to gather outside or inside a venue to disrupt a concert by a performer or a band.

Sadly, our world has become too political and politicized. And the situation is unlikely to get any better in the future. In fact, given that our rulers seem to want to divide us into groups for their benefit, this situation is more likely to get worse.

When it comes to Rory I actually like the Taste stuff quite a lot as well which was basically two studio albums and two live albums on Polydor Records (the Taste record company) which down the years have released some nice and also interesting compilation records & cds here in the UK including the x4 cd box set I'll Remember which I have x3 individual box sets of which came out back in 2015 I think(?) plus a few other compilation records & cds as well along with the four original Taste album cds and a nice double Taste vinyl album pressed on light green vinyl from 1988. Back in the mid-1980s a German 'white' vinyl record showed up in the HMV store in London's Oxford Street titled "Taste Live at the Marquee club in 1968" which from vague memory featured live versions of Blister on the Moon and Same Old Story and I think the other tracks were 'blues' numbers like The First Time I Met The Blues & Five Long Years and several others anyway I have never seen that album since and not even in any second hand record shops so I assume very few of the records were originally sold in the UK at any rate?.
