John-Densmore-and-Robby-Krieger.jpg

Surviving Doors members John Densmore and Robby Krieger are coming together in concert for the first time in 15 years — and fittingly, it’s in honor of one of their former bandmates.

According to the Doors website, Densmore and Krieger have been scheduled as headliners for A Celebration for Ray Manzarek, an all-star benefit performance for Stand Up to Cancer that’s set to be held at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles on Feb. 12 — which would have marked the 76th birthday for Manzarek, who passed away in 2013 after a battle with bile duct cancer.

Densmore and Krieger will be joined by a band that includes Exene Cervenka and John Doe of X, Rami Jaffee of the Foo Fighters, the Stone Temple Pilots’ Robert Deleo and Jane’s Addiction‘s Stephen Perkins, as well as “extra special surprise guests.” Ticketing information is available now.

The Manzarek tribute is something that Densmore and Krieger have been discussing for years, and looks to be part of a renewed burst of band-related activity surrounding the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Doors. Krieger hinted at some things in the works when he spoke with Billboard last year, saying, “There’ll be something cool happening. I can’t say exactly what yet, but we never did get our tribute to Ray thing going, so it’ll be part of that, for sure, and probably for Jim [Morrison], too.”

Given the tone of Krieger’s comments, future live performances featuring himself and Densmore would seem to be very much a possibility. “For some reason people still love the Doors’ music, and I can tell you that it’s still fun to play,” he added. “I think that’s a good indicator right there; if people still like to play it, then people still like to listen to it. I’ve played on a lot of records that I wouldn’t even care about hearing again or playing live, but for some reason the Doors songs are still fun to play.”

A Manzarek tribute.......is cool. And they really should make it a double tribute to Morrison also.

I was gonna get a bit snarky if these guys were reuniting as THE DOORS....that would be wrong IMO.

Absolutely agreed, Magic. It would be the same, as if Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr will reunite as The Beatles.

This.

Maybe Densmore and Krieger could fly the Butts Band banner again, that would be cool! Loved the first album, still hate the band name though... I wonder what Jess Roden is doing these days?
