Another reason may be that the spiders thought the ash was insects and expanded their webs to catch all of them or maybe the ash ruined their webs and they made more to replace them. Whatever the reason, they made webs all over the yard.

Actually they might not be spider webs.
There is a phenomenon called "smoke webs".

You might be right. I was out there cleaning up the webs and didn't see many spiders associated with the webs.

I am happy to hear you are safe and your home was spared from devastation. Back in the early 80's we were evacuated from a forest fire in NC. To this very day I can still remember the thick smoke and the sound of the fire. Our home was spared, but everything we owned smelled like smoke and ash covered everything.

I was listening to NPR talk about the Cali fires this morning.
It sounds like the whole state is on fire.

Looking at the map it looks pretty dire.
