Call me a cynic, but record store day is just another marketing ploy. The corporates are milking vinyl for all and more than it's worth. The sad thing is that it is driving up the prices of second hand vinyl so that a lot of real vinyl collectors can no longer afford to buy.

That's definitely what it has turned into. I said something similar in my first post in this thread.

everything is a marketing poly these days. every click on the internet every phone call every search... every time you walk down a side walk... every time you drive your car.

the ploy applies to you. but yeah it is killing the cost structure for sure. no way a vinyl record for the same cost as a cd. but you take the good with the bad I guess

me for instances this is creating the opportunity to buy Thunders albums, which is good

Sorry but I don't feel it's a marketing ploy as basically most of the releases are from small or independent labels in which the quantities of most releases are under 3000 copies. I haven't noticed the price of used vinyl going up...in fact at Hi-fidelity Records in Tonawanda, NY just last week I spent $14 on used copies of Alice Cooper "Easy Action", Nazareth "No Mean City", & Deep Purple "Fireball". It's to each their own... I know people are against RSD but my wife & I have been enjoying this day for the past few years

Exactly! If anything Record Store Day does drum up business for the local Record stores that participate.

Well, you're very lucky to be in a part of the world where new records are reasonably priced. Over here in SA records are priced at more than twice the cost of the equivalent cd. (New CDs cost ±R150 or 15$ while records cost ±R340-R450 or $34-45) If you want a deluxe edition, the price goes into the over R1000 (>$100) mark. When vinyl first made a comeback, the albums were selling for R100 ($10) and that was only about 4 or 5 years ago.
Regarding the price of second hand vinyl going up, perhaps we have a much smaller market than you do there. Less than a year ago the price of say a re-issue Led Zeppelin album was ±R60 ($6). Today that same album, same condition will cost R120 ($12). Even the cheaper, more common lp's have increased by at least 50%.

Well said. Couldn't agree more. I f@#!!g hate downloads. I really miss going to record stores and browsing through all the new as well as old stuff. If RSD brings back the record store, then it may be a good thing. Here's hoping :grinthumb

Actually I was only referring to the used vinyl which I said. I agree with new vinyl being expensive as it comes out(I would love to buy the Kiss remasters on Vinyl but the cost was way to high). The record store day releases may be a bit pricey as well but if something is too pricey I won't get it. I spent 60 bucks record store day and thought I got a decent amount of stuff. It makes me wonder though because I paid $27 for the double Johnny Thunders album from a tiny record store where as at a much more busier and bigger store the album went for $31. I didn't realize you were from another country where things are different and I don't blame you for getting upset with the prices. Here as I said Record Store Day is pretty cool and I'm glad I went because there were 2 bands from New Jersey playing in a store and I ended up buying a CD from each of the bands. Had I not gone I probably never would've heard the 2 bands. At least here in the States as I said I think Record store Day does promote the record stores and I'm not referring to just vinyl sales I also mean cd's so I feel it's all good.

I am just glad we have it and still have access to vinyl. sure its marketing so what it encourages record store to carry vinyl, provides the means to and opportunity for small brick and mortar stores to sell and make money. its a reason there for those store to stay in business

So bring it on its great

I agree. There is as much fun in the hunt as there is in the acquisition of music. Online purchases and downloads can never replace the tactile thrill of flipping through stax of wax and finding that pearl you have been looking for.
