Hey,
The sound I'm referring to appears at the beginning of Caravan's 9 Feet Underground, and Traffic's Low Spark of High Heeled Boy's, (middle...and especially that dissonant power chord at the end). I always thought it was an ARP 2600 being run through a fuzz pedal, but the 2600 isn't mentioned in the credits. I'm thinking a hammond with some VERY distorted FX...maybe a RAT or Big Muff Pie pedal. Any other suggestions?
