As someone who also likes Camel, I would recommend Barclay James Harvest. Here's a good song to start with:

I was thinking about BJH, but I didn't mention them as they have quite a lot of mellotron.

*Googles Mellotron*

Interesting. I've ever heard of this instrument before but it sounds pretty cool. To be honest, I'm new to BJH so I haven't really paid that much attention to their sound yet. I just know that I like it.

It can be heard on their early catalogue, for example the track 'She Said'.

This band is probably considered to be more metal than prog, but I find them to be very progressive in much of their music. Always great guitar work by John Petrucci.

Try Riverside, on the heavier side of prog. Keyboards are there but not over dominant. Great guitar work from Piotr Grudziński. Try their album Second Life Syndrome.
And on the artsy side of prog you have Roxy Music, look them up in the seventies section :D. http://www.classicrockforums.com/forum/f6/roxy-music-official-thread-20104/

If you really feel adventurous try either Gentle Giant or Van der Graaf Generator.

Prog or not, maybe some Atomic Rooster?

i'd love to get into a good prog-rock band.

i'll tell you what i like and dislike in that genre.

do not like yes-too many keyboards.
do not like elp- same reason.
do not like jethro tull.
don't like peter gabriel genesis.

i like some of marillion.
i own two phil collins's genesis which i love-a trick of the tail and wind and wuthering.
i love pink floyd from dark side of the moon onward.
i love supertramp's crime of the century.
i have two roger waters albums-radio kaos and amused to death.
i have two camel albums-snow goose and moonmadness.

that it i think. that may give you a clue as to what i like in a prog-band?
i really don't like a lot of keyboards, although i suppose camel and early supertramp highlighted them.
ideally i'd love to find a band that feature lots of lead guitar, however i imagine most people fancy that, but there aren't that many bands like that around?

thanks.

Wow your prog tastes are very similar to mine! Except i'm not a fan of Marillion. Everything else you said i agree with 100%! :grinthumb

I agree with Aktivator....try some jazz fusion. Brand X is an excellent place to start, especially if you find jazz a hard swallow. Very melodic with interesting time signatures and amazing musicianship

Others to check out:

Colosseum II
Babe Ruth. Great stuff, more straight rock than prog though.
High Tide
Pete Brown and Piblokto!

Manfred Mann's Earth Band. The Watch album has some good guitar playing to complement MM's keyboards.
