Strictly imaginary with no regard for time or age.
To have replaced Plant in Zeppelin you'd have lots of choices. A few:
David Coverdale
Lenny Wolf - Kingdom Come
Jack Russel - Great White
Karen O - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Randy Jackson -Zebra
Dan Auerbach - The Black Keys
Dave King - Fastway
Jack White -White Stripes
Coverdale may be the obvious choice, but his upper register is forced and unpleasant.
Russel's voice is a bit nasal, thin, and too hair-metal. Karen O would've been interesting. Would love to hear her sing "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You".
Anyway all good choices, but I'd go with Dave King. His voice has lots of character and attitude, and he's got the breath control for those long Plant wails. It's funny that the guy from Fastway now fronts the the popular Irish-pub-rock band Flogging Molly.
AC/DC (Bon Scott)
Believe it or not, Anthony Followill from Kings of Leon could easily do all the Bon Scott songs, and I dare say perhaps even better.
