Strictly imaginary with no regard for time or age.

To have replaced Plant in Zeppelin you'd have lots of choices. A few:

David Coverdale
Lenny Wolf - Kingdom Come
Jack Russel - Great White
Karen O - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Randy Jackson -Zebra
Dan Auerbach - The Black Keys
Dave King - Fastway
Jack White -White Stripes

Coverdale may be the obvious choice, but his upper register is forced and unpleasant.

Russel's voice is a bit nasal, thin, and too hair-metal. Karen O would've been interesting. Would love to hear her sing "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You".

Anyway all good choices, but I'd go with Dave King. His voice has lots of character and attitude, and he's got the breath control for those long Plant wails. It's funny that the guy from Fastway now fronts the the popular Irish-pub-rock band Flogging Molly.

AC/DC (Bon Scott)

Believe it or not, Anthony Followill from Kings of Leon could easily do all the Bon Scott songs, and I dare say perhaps even better.

Michael Des Barres could've worked too, judging by his Plant imitations on the first Detective album.

Also, out of curiousity, how does King sound these days? I'll admit to hardly knowing anything about Flogging Molly, so the last real document I've heard is that Katmandü album from '91.

I'd never heard Des Barres sing before. He's pretty good. I'd thought he was just a good looking face. When he's mellow he sounds a little like Paul Rogers. And a LOT like Steve Marriot the rest of the time. Cool guy. He must have had a bunch of fun in the 70s looking like a female model.

Dave King's band Flogging Molly is good for what it is. I'm just not into traditional Irish pub-rock. I like to thrash, but that kind of jumpy Irish pep isn't innate to me. Not unless you shoot me up with 20cc of adrenaline and light me on fire.

Anyway, I love King's Plant-like wail around the 30 second mark, here:

Fun thread!

I'll play, even though I will probably get flamed.

Geddy Lee (Rush) replacement = Ann Wilson

Dumb? Geddy sounds like a female half the time and uses a wide range that Ann could easily cover. Is it that hard of a stretch to imagine her doing Time Stand Still or Mystic Rhythms? Not for me, but I listen to both many times a day.

Best vocalist + best band = :grinthumb

I know it would work, even though I need a fire suit every time I bring it up.

You're quite right on the Rodgers and Marriott comparisons (I hear a little bit of Rod Stewart in there myself, especially during his Silverhead days), as good a singer as Des Barres is, I've always felt he seems to being suffering something of an identity crisis, spending most of his time never knowing exactly who he actually wants to sound like. Credit to him though, he does the whole "vocal chameleon" thing fairly well, here he pulls off a very passable Glenn Hughes impression.
