Paul Rodgers Covers Otis Redding's 'I've Been Loving You Too Long'

Paul Rodgers has released a cover of Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You Too Long," a cut from his upcoming album of Memphis soul covers, The Royal Sessions, due February 4.

"I had been playing in groups since I was 13 or 14, and suddenly Otis' band became my ideal band. They played from a deeper place," Rodgers told Rolling Stone of Otis' influence on him.

"The one thing I loved about blues and soul was the way they taught the world how to express such deep feelings. I was brought up in a fairly emotionally repressed kind of society in Northeast England where one didn't express emotions and was expected to keep a stiff upper lip. But I felt that the part of me that was born to be a singer needed to share these kinds of emotions, and through Otis, I found a much-yearned-for outlet for this."

Rodgers version of "I've Been Loving You Too Long" is currently streaming via SoundCloud

I've always thought Paul had a fantastic voice. I think he does quite well with singing soul & blues.

He just couldn't fill Freddie's shoes, though. Nice try, I'd say, but Queen was not even close to being the same.

Otis was an original, I have never heard a cover of any of his songs that stands up to his version.

But for Rodgers to pay homage to a legend, I think that's a nice gesture and sometimes piques the curiosity of a young person who will dig into Otis's catalog.

I couldn't agree more. As Sunny said, to some degree Freddie was Queen. His voice was such an integral part of the Queen sound! That being said, I don't think "The Cosmos Rocks" is such a bad record. I think people would have been less hard on it, if it hadn't been sold as a Queen record.

As for Paul Rodgers, he's one of my favourite singers and I really look forward to his new album.
