Despite teasing their fans for several months, including a high-profile song that premiered during the Super Bowl, U2 will not release a new album or tour in 2014.

Billboard broke the news today (March 7), confirming with several sources that sessions with producer Danger Mouse, arguably the hottest producer in the indie world today, have hit a bit of a snag. They have brought in Ryan Tedder (OneRepublic) and Paul Epworth (Adele) to help out.

“It seems to be taking longer for them to finish an album as they get older,” an unnamed source said, and quickly spun the negative into a positive by adding that “the great thing about U2 is that the whole of a record is always better than the sum of its parts. That magic that the band always seems to capture…they have yet to capture it.”

The article also states that U2 were planning to announce a Fall 2014 tour later this month, but that has now been postponed until the following summer to correspond with the new record.

In February, U2 offered a new song, ‘Invisible,’ as a free download for a day as part of a fundraising effort for Bono‘s charity, (RED), which helps fight the global spread of AIDS. They chose ‘Invisible’ because it was “the first one we finished.” A second from these sessions, ‘Ordinary Love,’ was featured in the film ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’ and nominated for an Academy Award.

I can see where the dedicated U2 fans would implode. Teasing with new songs and other hype................then nothing. No tour. No album.

Definitely building up some tension for when a new album does come out :grinthumb

People are really disappointed over at the other place. And I don't blame them.

The band first stated that they were gonna quickly put out an album in 2010 called Songs Of Ascent. That did not happen. And then the rumours started building up in 2011. Still nothing! Then finally Ordinary Love for Mandela hit the scene in 2013. And a special charity single called Invisible in 2014. Things were definitely heating up now with a rooftop performance on Fallon, the Oscars and so on. And now, suddenly this bizarre announcement of a postponement to 2015. Something doesn't sound right in the U2 camp!

I'm glad I'm not the only person who thinks Bono is disgusting...

Magic, what is it about Bono that you find disgusting? I'm genuinely curious.

Many of us U2 fans are still holding on to the mental image of the Bono of the 80s and 90s. I was really crazy about them up until 1997's Pop. Then with the turn of the millenium something seems to have changed in the way they operate. They became even larger than life... a self-proclaimed biggest band in the world. To make thing worse, the quality of the music suffered. That's when I started losing interest. 2000's ATYCLB and 2004's Atomic Bomb are my least favourites U2 records for a reason. At least 2009's NLOTH was a step back in the right direction.

Long story short, I don't defend today's Bono all that much. So I'd like to know what exactly people don't like about the Bono of today.

U2 have done this before. I like the fAct that a band doesn't rush out an album if it's not right yet.

See what they come up, I'm not writing them off yet. I am trying to be a realist, unlike them.

I do think they are a bit out of their gord. They took No Line on the Horizon sales a little hard, Bono saying it didn't cater to the need for pop or something.

it had sold like 5 million copies at the time I think. 5 million...go figure.
