DALTREY TALKS ABOUT THE WHO’S FUTURE

Although The Who had hoped to work on new music and tour this year, as we reported yesterday, those plans have been scrapped. We caught up with singer Roger Daltrey to get the reason why.

“That’s all been shelved because Pete [Townshend]’s having trouble with his ear.”

Townshend has been suffering from tinnitus for some time now but it might be taking a turn for the worse. Daltrey told England’s Daily Express that one of Pete’s ears is “really bad” and the guitarist is “worried about losing it.” Time will tell what the band winds up doing but you can stay up to date at TheWho.com.

I don't think the fans would want to damage himself health wise for us. I hope he get's it taken care of and that it doesn't get any worse and if he's not able to play as a pre-caution then so be it.

One can always record at low volume..the touring. on the other hand, would not be as good and more of a risk.

I wasn't aware they were even talking about a new album. I wouldn't want Pete to go and take himself out of commission for the fans sake though.

While a new album would be interesting to hear, at this point I doubt they have a good one left in them. At least as a unit.

However, I bet Daltrey could turn out a killer solo record if he is working with the right people.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news MP but there is no cure for his condition, it is due to playing loud live music for decades the damage is permanent. All you can do in Pete's position is try to save what little hearing range you have left, eventually he will be totally deaf.

Eric Clapton is in the same boat, I was shocked on Larry King when he said one ear is starting to go on him, but he won't use any kind of protection. He will be deaf in one ear within a few years.

Al Di Meola is another guitarist with the same problem, he has even contemplated suicide to stop the distracting noise inside his head, and played nothing but acoustic tours the last few years. I think he might have picked up his electric guitar for a special occasion but he is suffering too.

Tinnitus for those of you who don't know is when the little hairs inside the magical box of your inner ear break off due to exposure to prolonged loud noises. That is the place where the mechanical vibrations you hear as sound are transmitted as electrical impulses to the brain where they are decoded into the sound you hear.(The vibrations are picked up by magnetic fluid in your cochlea which covers the little hairs and changes the physical movement of the tiny hairs into the electronic impulses that go to your brain, like I said a magic box in your ear and you only get one per lifetime.)
