I don't think it even IS metal anymore. It's just an other Eversence like band now or however you spell their name. To me all the elements that made it progressive and metal have completely been removed.

Nawwwww.....much much more complex than Evernescence.

I think the new album is great, but I can't deny your points on the older material. Great times and memories from those albums. Tarja was such a looker too as well as a fantastic vocalist!

ONCE will always be right up there as a favourite. Been likstening to Century Child more and more these days too.

I can understand why some don't like the new album, in fact I even respect why some don't like Anettes vocals for the band, all depends on personal perspective. It is good that this band does stimulate such interesting discussions.

I'm not saying it's bad album ..just that it isn't my thing and I certainly do not see it as metal.

If thats what they choose to play these days ..whatever ..it's not like they could have continued in the direction they were in w/ this vocalist anyway..then I will just seek out my symphonic metal somewhere else.

Just going on record as being greatly disappointed w/ the decision to play this type of thing rather then symphonic metal.

I think the fact most would say Anette would not have the vocal range to do the symphonic is why I think they made a sound change to some extent. I think you raise some good points about the progressive and heavier elements being gone. Dark Passion Play had some very mixed to leaning more on the negative reviews. I guess Tuomas wanted to take this further and probably distance the band more from what they did with Tarja. Part of me will always wonder if that was a major part in the change of sound to this album.

I think they're still quite heavy on the score end of it. I mean it's not like it's a 100% pop album, though Annette does bring some of that quality to the band.

They were accused of this a bit on Dark Passion PLay. Here is an interview from the Echo awards during that time. I'd say around :37 the discussion starts, if it's metal or pop or both.

It may not be pop but to me it's just gothic rock now. And it is obvious that Annette can not do what Tarja was doing but my thing is that they should have replaced her with someone more suited to the job. Having decided not to go that road, and instead change direction completely, into a Gothic Rock thing, they have definitely lost me as a fan.

I was already feeling that way on the last album but I had held out hope for a bit of the old style on this one....it was foolish of me and I am moving on w/ the knowledge that I gave them a chance ..

Not saying they will miss me or that they won't have fans in the future ..
just saying as a once big time fan, this is definitely where we part company.

It's a hard one for me because I love the new CD, but at the same time I cannot argue with you on the old stuff, ya know??

There are many times that I still miss Tarja...BIG TIME! Just toss on End Of An Era right???

I honestly think, that an album like Imaginaerum was built for Tarja...it has her all over it, and if she was the singer on this it would be a much heavier album, without changing the music really.

As much as I love Imaginaerum I do miss the fantastic vocals of Tarja, ironic really since when I first started listening to Nightwish I wondered whether I would be able to cope with Tarja's operatic voice! Boy, how that voice soon grew on me :) My favourite Nightwish album is Wishmaster and it's actually become one of my all time favourite albums by any artist/band. I can't see any future Nightwish album touching the love I have for it mainly because of Tarja's absence. Not dissing Annette, she has a lovely voice and as I say, I think Imaginaerum's great, but for me her voice...well it just doesn't take me off to a different plane like when I listen to Tarja's. Trying to imagine just how Imaginaerum would sound with Tarja on vocals...you're probably right MP - it's be much heavier.

I've noticed in reviews from Nightwish fans (I can't comment myself as I've never heard Dark Passion Play) a few have noted Annette sounds much more 'at home' on this album than the previous, like she's finally found her feet and is much more confident. I will be interested in comparing the two when I get round to picking up a copy of Dark Passion Play.

Her performance in Scaretale is pretty wicked, but it would have been cool to see what Tarja would have brought to a project like this.
