I'd been to several of his Group concerts before going to this one, and the only reason I went was because the local radio station was promoting it with Group music, and needless to say it was nothing like that. I couldn't find a shred of structure in the music to hang onto, so it was basically noise to my ears. It was the first concert I ever walked out on (so far I've done that twice, the second one being Ben Folds, but only because the sound was so God-awful I couldn't stand it).

The Metheny Group can be energizing, but they also have just as many dreamy numbers that can kind of put you in a trance.

main reason I like Methany.... but you can still be energetic with slower or less driving music like that... oh well... everyone is entitled to an off day I suppose:)
I can't decide if I like Ben Folds or not... A friend of mine is obsessed with him, she has a ridiculous amount of memorabilia and cd's and anything he has ever put out in some type of physical form, but I can't decide if I like him or not... it's not that I'm indifferent to his music, I just can't decide if I like it or hate it:heheh:

Folds is kind of a quirky musician. I think most folks either love him or hate him. We were at that concert because we'd seen him live a year earlier when he was touring with Guster and Rufus Wainwright, and I thought he was pretty witty. He seemed kind of like a smaller, smart-ass Elton John. ;)

brilliant way to describe him:grinthumb

I'm kind of funny with Elton too, sometimes I absolutely love his tunes, but others I'm just like "christ... shut it off... its so boring" then a day later I'll be back to being fascinated by it... so maybe that's my problem...

Without a doubt Santana was the most disappointing concert I've attended. The concert was a twin-bill with Jeff Beck headlining. Had Beck opened up for Santana that night, I'm sure we would have walked out halfway into Santana's set. What a crap performance.

At least Jeff Beck with Terry Bozzio on drums made up for it.

While I didn't walk out on them, I've been disappointed at concerts by: The Beach Boys, The Doobie Brothers, Stephen Stills & Manassas, all mainly because of crappy singing and/or guitar playing. Maybe they were all having bad nights.

OTOH, I've seen these performers several times and they never failed to impress me: Steve Goodman, The Roches, Bruce Cockburn, Guster, The Pat Metheny Group, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Karla Bonoff, Melissa Etheridge.

And two out of the three times I saw Dan Fogelberg he was good. The other time I couldn't tell because the sound was craptastic. Other concerts with really, really bad sound have included Jimmy Buffett (though I saw him once outdoors at the University of Miami, long before the Parrot-head thing and it was great), Ben Folds, REM, Toad the Wet Sprocket, John Hiatt.

I'm sure I'm forgetting several on both sides of the coin.

If that was their tour from the mid-nineties, I agree. Jeff Beck and Terry Bozzio were great; Santana not at all.
