For a time, Emerson, Lake & Palmer ruled the progressive rock genre, traveling with some of the most epic stage productions that had ever been attempted in the time period. Doing so often brought critical malign and in the case of an ill-fated tour with an orchestra, financial devastation to the group.

With a reissue campaign oncoming which will re-examine and expand their catalog of work, Keith Emerson is looking back at the highs and lows that ELP experienced in their history which now spans over four decades.

He recalls, “We were a band who could play in front of any size of audience. We were comfortable in front of a few thousand in Newcastle, but we could also play the California Jam, which we headlined in 1974.”

As Emerson relates to Classic Rock, the California Jam found them playing in front of a crowd that numbered nearly half a million, “but we took the challenge and made it work.”

For Emerson, the “challenge” meant presenting a show that was more than just the music and in doing so, it brought out the critics who found their elaborate stage show to be excessive. He feels like they were unfairly targeted when others were doing the same things, sometimes in a vein that he considered to be ridiculous by comparison.

“No disrespect to Peter Gabriel, but I never got his approach to theatrics in Genesis,” says Emerson. “What was he trying to prove by dressing up as a flower? That’s pretentious. What we did was become showmen, yet we get hammered for it, while everyone applauds Gabriel.”

The initial reissues of Emerson Lake & Palmer’s first two albums will drop on Sept. 11. The new editions will feature the original albums augmented with new stereo and 5.1 remixes done by Porcupine Tree’s Steven Wilson, who helmed similar projects for King Crimson and Jethro Tull.

Previously unheard outtakes will also be part of the package and additional album reissues of ‘Pictures at an Exhibition,’ ‘Trilogy,’ ‘Brain Salad Surgery’ and ‘Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends – Ladies & Gentlemen’ will follow, although the release date for those has not been announced.

I agree completely. I'm no ELP backer, but his point is spot on. ELP were very talented musicians who proved their worth in their play, yet Gabriel dressed up like an eccentric goofball and people call him genius for it.

Huh? :wtf:

When Emmerson was stabbing the keyboard it often held notes so he could free his hands to do more. Granted, I never saw him do that and really add to the music and his jumping on top of it etc was almost as embarrasing to watch as some of Gabriel's antics.
I don't really mind either thing and both are great musicians soo...

I'm a big ELP fan, and I felt the same way about Gabriel the first time I saw photos of him during his Genesis days, back then it did seem over the top to me. But I am a huge Gabriel fan so I got used to his theatrics.

I never saw ELP live, but I do consider Emerson one of the best keyboardists in Rock music period. His range is stellar, his exuberance on stage is no different from Ian Anderson and what he does with his flute...:heheh:...except a piano is a little harder to mess around with.

I am ordering a new 180 gram vinyl edition of ELP's debut, my favorite. Also I have a set of 4 "Manticore" CD's made in Germany that are Outstanding, Sox can back me up on that. By far the best digital versions ever made and a first run set as well, not remastered or altered.

Having said that I am a massive fan of Stephen Wilson both for his work with PT and what he's done for the old classic albums he's updated so I might be tempted to check out his work on ELP's discog.

When Phil Collins left Genesis to record such masterpieces as Another Day in Paradise and his version of You Can't Hurry Love, he said, "I never liked Emerson, Lake and Palmer anyway." So, I am surprised ELP remained quiet for so long.

If Peter Gabriel had not dressed as a flower or a fox in a ballgown, he would still have been a bit strange. I saw him once, wearing a blue polyester jumpsuit, standing perfectly still and staring straight ahead throughout the show. It was weird.

I've never seen ELP live, but I've got the Royal Albert Hall show, from 1992, on DVD. It does not strike me as elaborate and the only showman is Carl Palmer with his drum solo.
