Sorry for the delay in answering your question Tray about Side 1 of Hounds of love. My faves on side 1 are Big sky and Mother stands for comfort. Big sky, imhoa,is typical Kate, fun, slightly eccentric, and a subtle hook that grabs you and you can't forget it. Mother.... shows, again imhoa,a reflective side to Kate, perhaps thinking of her younger years.
I believe that a new album, albeit a remastered and extended version of Red shoes and Sensual World in one package, called The Directors Cut,is out in May 2011. Apparently it will contain alternate versions of both albums aswell?.
Moving on to 1986, and in February Kate was asked by Peter Gabriel to record a duet with him for his new album, So. The song, 'Don't Give Up', about the soul-destroying effects of unemployement, was later released as a single and reached top ten.
Kate and Peter
In April Kate performed another duet, this time with Rowan Atkinson at the Secret Policeman's Ball, a benefit show raising money for Amnesty International and a forerunner of charity fundraisers like Comic Relief. Here they are singing Do Bears...
The Hair of the Hound video EP was released in June, featuring Running Up That Hill, Hounds of Love, The Big Sky and Cloudbusting. More like mini films than pop videos, they marked Kate's debut as a director and showcased Kate's ever growing talent as a dancer and actress.
November saw the release of the first Kate Bush compilation album, The Whole Story. Kate had some reservations about releasing the album saying, "I was concerned that it would be like a 'K-Tel' record, a cheap combo with little thought behind it. [But] we put a lot of work into the packaging and running order and the response has been phenomenal - I'm amazed.' EMI spent a large sum on TV promotion of the album, and got the outcome they were hoping for - The Whole Story rocketed to the top of the album charts.

Kate recorded a new vocal for the compilation's Wuthering Heights and Experiment IV was a new song, and had been released a couple of weeks prior to The Whole Story to promote the album.
Wuthering Heights (re-worked with new vocals): "It was a strange and exciting experience re-mixing and putting a new vocal to this song. When I first sang it in 1977 my voice was so different." - Kate
Experiment IV
Experiment IV is an unsettling, eerie song because of its subject matter - finding a "sound that could kill someone"..."from the painful cries of mothers to a terrifying scream"... I remember the first time I heard it, it sent my thoughts into overdrive - would it ever be possible to record or make such hideous, frightening sounds that they had the power to kill?! I know if a sound is loud enough it will kill you (interesting info here: Sounds That Can Kill You ). The video is amazing and was actually banned from the UK TV chart show Top of the Pops since it was deemed too violent to be broadcast pre-watershed!
Kate, the sound demon!
This was the first album of Kate's I ever bought - my interest in her had been piqued at a young age but not enough to go out and buy her records (anyway all my pocket money was spent on Abba then Duran Duran records at that time ). It wasn't until my late teens that I decided that I'd actually like some Kate Bush material to add to my collection of music, so from just having the compilation album I spent a few months buying all her albums - something I'm so pleased I did as most of my favourite songs weren't included in The Whole Story (whyever gems like Hammer Horror weren't included I'll never know!). I know some people knock artists' greatest hits albums but I personally think it's a good way to give that nudge into buying the individual albums. That's certainly what happened with The Whole Story for me - there were the big hits I'd heard and loved but somehow a few of the songs had missed my radar, so hearing the other hits for the first time and loving them too I knew I just had to buy Kate's whole album collection
Nice write up again character .. The Whole Story was the first compilation cd I bought. I still have it and still play it. In my mind the production team got it bang on.
I decided not to continue with this thread the way I was as it just hasn't generated much interest the last few time I've updated it, so either a) there's not many Kate Bush fans here or b) (the dreaded) it's just been too boring I will stop by with bits of new news though like now...
Kate has a new studio album, with seven new tracks, coming out in a couple of months!!
Due for release on 21st November, the new album '50 Words for Snow' is 65 minutes long and consists of songs "set against a backdrop of falling snow". Sounds right up my street, a wintery album (yes I'm weird, I love winter ) and I hear it has guest vocals by somebody I greatly admire, the actor/comedian/author/tv presenter (the list goes on) Stephen Fry. Can't wait
It was never "boring" Tray, you were doing a bang up job with Kate spoken from a personal point of view that was unique and something I would never attempt myself.
I wish you would just continue on the way you were, when it's finished it will be a fabulous Kate Bush resource with your stamp on it. And many of my threads are lying in the ditch beside the road these days, some even have mushrooms growing on them due to neglect.
I also fall behind in here, and lose track of things due to my impending senility I figure...
Keep writing Tray, finish the story of Kate for us.
Thanks for that LG, and I very much appreciate you keep stopping by this thread especially since you're not even a Kate fan! Okey doke I'll mull it over and may carry on as I was
I read it Tray! I have just bought Kate Bush A Biography by Rob Jovanovic. A few weeks ago I got "The Kick Inside" which was her first album (I think?). Anyway, you brought Kate Bush to my attention which wouldn't have happened had you not put up a thread for her
