^ Well yes many bands than many consider metal are good, but it's not the label that does it for me it's the music.

Makes sense to me.

I agree. Their music is not really in the same heavy state as your typical metal band, its more simple and straightforward. AC/DC are not metal whether people want to dispute that or not. The label doesn't bother me, its just facts is all.

He's probably explored the genre in the past, but considering the "metal bands" from the 80's and from then on, I personally wouldn't consider him metal.

But since metal is so subjective to the listener, how does one "define" metal? Heavy guitars? Screaming? Headbanging riffs?

I consider metal to have more complexity to their music structure than a lot of general hard rock bands I hear. Not just about being heavy and screaming vocals but its the way metal bands write their songs too.

I think he's done some metal songs and is (as the op suggested) on the edge of metal (at times the cutting edge) but doesn't at all fall squarely into the category.

As been mentioned before The Coop spans genres/sub genres. Heavy Metal happens to be one of the genres Alice has done.

Any want to put A.C. in the Metal category ? I would have to say he misses Metal by a hair. His biggest hits are hard pop rock at best. Tho I think the band rocks like a mofo on many other songs, they're a little shy of the metal genre. ok,flame away..
I'd call him/them Metal. He's a legend of Metal without a doubt and quite important & influential alongside Black Sabbath, Whitesnake, Judas Priest, W.A.S.P. & Dio.

I really liked his relatively recent album "Brutal Planet" & would definitely say that that's quite a heavy album that I'd consider Metal.

Either way, give the guy/band respect as always fellas. There was nobody like him at the time & there definitely won't be anyone like that in the future unfortunately. He'll always be on/in my iPod.

He looks metal, sounds metal in his interviews, dresses metal, but I still don't feel the metal thru the music, very heavy at times tho.

Hell, he always talks about Rob Zombie as being a younger friend, Rob idolizes him calling him an older friend & Rob Zombie is surely Metal. They're like "Brothers of Metal (or perhaps Destruction for that matter...lol)" from generation to generation. Hard Rock at the least.

He's never been metal in my eyes.
A bit of grunge around 2000 - 'Brutal Planet' and 'Dragontown' - but I would always classify both him and the Alice Cooper Band as straightforward rock, really excellent driving, hard rock.
