^^^ my situation is very much like yours Vehicle but kind of the opposite. My wife is 3 years younger than me but she grew up on a farm and didnt get into music until the 80's and mostly pop at that. Me, I can't remember a time where I didn't hear music as a kid, FM and AM radio, in the mid 70's. I'm a 70's guy, she's all 80's. We've been together for 20 years and she gets my obsession with music.

As for a song being more than just a song, well, music is mostly all I think about. When I'm not listening to music, I usually have some song in my head, even when I'm sleeping. People I know get tired of me talking about bands and songs that I love, they don't understand how one person can be so obsessed with music. I am thankful for the internet that I can find other people like me who love music as much as me.

Some interesting posts in here so far, and good stories.:)

I'm not sure I'll say anything or not I don't want to incur Sooty's wrath and be called a 'hipster snob' or something worse....:peek

I've always thought hipster snobbishness equated to someone who thumbed their nose at the established acts and championed the obscure, underground bands. Not that I mind at all seeing it is a good cause but when they go about making comments that well known "guitar player X" does not belong in the Top 50 of all time reeks of being a self righteous pompous ass and having a delusion of themselves being so cool. Hipsters to me are normally open minded individuals who can adapt to any type of music without having to resort to snide comments about a popular band others like. It's about respect and not being a schmuck.

It's funny though that people in your life that have known you for most of theirs instantly equate you to your favorite band whether they hear a song or they are mentioned in a movie or a show. People familiar with you can hear a song and think of you. A friend recently went to some talent show and a young band did a cover of "Kashmir"...he told me a few days later about it and said I would have dug it. It cuts both ways as I can hear a song or hear about a band and a certain individual flashes to me.

In a relationship I'm the type who'll want somebody who's passionate about something other than me and in that sense whatever differences we have we'll have a healthy amount of space to enjoy them on our own still. Plus, as a compromise I'm willing to open up to the others taste if they are as open as I am. In the death metal/hard rock scenario well I guess it would tell me what kind of loving they wanted that night! :oyea:

You are so right! There are certain songs that make me instantly think of certain friends, family , or situations.

Every time I hear "green grass and high tides" I am reminded of the first time I drank until I vomited. Best party ever!!

Blackfoot's "left turn on a red light" instantly reminds me of a high school friend. April Wine's "say hello" reminds me of my first serious love, the guy I married.

A Hard Day's Night takes me back to when I was a kid and my parents went out, and I was home with my sister. She was on the phone, so I flipped through the channels and "discovered" The Beatles. My mom died in 2009, and my dad died in 2011, I can still remember their television, the couch, and the fact that my sister talked on the phone the whole time the movie was on. I remember when they showed each Beatle jumping, but Ringo only jumped a little. I'm not a hipster. I'm a mocker. :D

Maybe 5 years ago when I was still single, strong disagreements on music would've been a real deal breaker. But nowadays I don't care as much. My wife generally is aware of the most popular songs but is still a casual listener at best. She doesn't bother finding out about artists or album discographies etc. Every now and then, she will mention that she likes a song that I hate or don't care about. Examples: Rockstar by Nickelback, There She Goes by Sixpence None The Richer, This Love by Maroon 5... :gig But I love her. I cannot take music disagreements seriously. lol.
