I play Hendrix on my CD player.
Sure; if your happy with that, cool.
if you want to watch what Jimi's fingers are doing , like most guitarists at some point, then the visuals come in handy.

Live at the Isle Of Whyte is a great Hendrix live DVD (1970); he was using more effects by that time, the flanger sounds epic and while it's not the highest energy concert ever, the playing is real soulful and good.
There is no doubt to me that Hendrix was the best rock guitarist that "made it" ever!

it's kind of hard to be high energy when you're hitting the stage at something like 3 in the morning hehehe. but you're absolutely correct about watching him play, i picked up a lot of hendrixisms by watching any footage i could get my hands on back when i really started playing guitar in the mid 90s.

and NDF you'll be amazed at how far good right hand muting techniques will help you pick up hendrix's style

I was listening to a Hendrix compilation entitled "Freak Out Blues". Not sure if anyone's heard of this, BUT there's a blues ditty on there entitle "Funky Blues Jam". It really doesn't sound like him. Can anyone confirm whether that is Jimi playing or not?

i haven't heard that specific compilation but i've heard a few tracks in the past that really surprised me. a friend of mine had a tape of stuff recorded before he became famous with the experience then released without his consent which had some less than stellar guitar work or stuff that really just didn't sound like him at all.

i remember the liner notes in the compilation just called "Blues" from 94, about a some various blues jams the band would warm up on, the one of the comp was called 'jelly 292'. doesn't really sound like typical hendrix but it's an official release.

do you happen to have a link for that compilation or a clip of the tune? it's not listed on AMG.

You're damn right. Hendrix is definitely the best rock guitarist of all time.

I used to toy around with some of his songs in high school. I used to be able to fake a few of them. Hendrix's fingerings are a marvel. Lots of inventive voicings and bizarre jazz chords.

There's more soul and inventiveness in the intro of "Little Wing" than some bands display in their entire career.

wow it's not bad but my gut says, probably not, to it being hendrix. unless it happens to be a REALLY early pre-experience recording, like just warming up in his days with the isley brothers or something then maybe. it just seems far too subdued to really be jimi.

I am pretty sure it's him. I researched it a bit and most sites say he played most the songs on the album with the Band of Gypsy lineup, but that all the jams are his. It was recorded in '67.

It IS really laid back, and FUNKY too. You can hear some of his style, especially the strumming of muted strings toward the end. But overall I would never have figured it to be him.
