Hi guys.
I'm new here and I hope I'm not asking too much, but I apply to you, because you're fans and experts (in a way- you know your stuff about classic rock, right?) and I wonder could you get round to listen to this rendition of Hard To Handle - by Gary Barlow? Of course it isn't any sort of self promotion , it isn't me. This is some English pop star. Recently I had a big argument about this rendition (on YT) because I think it's bad. But so many people (mainly pop fans) think it is en excellent performance. I'm very curious about your opinion.
This is actually in a style of The Black Crowes.
So he are two videos - by Gary Barlow

here is an original song by Otis Redding

and here is The Black Crowes cover version.

I dunno, maybe I'm wrong and Gary is good singing this genre. :-(
What do you think?
Thanks in advance for your time.

NOTHING can compete with Otis Redding! The Black Crowes don't do it too badly but I don't think much of Gary's version.

Totally agree, Otis was the man very few covers of his originals come close.

Gary Barlow's version is horrible, no contest. Maybe the reason why the Pop fans are digging this version is because the song itself is awesome not the singer :grinthumb

I wasn't expecting to like the Gary Barlow, but it's not all that bad, and I'll give him a break anyways as I read he does a lot for charity etc. If his version was in the Rate the Song thread I'd have given it an 7/10.

you are very generous. I would give it a 5/10 for average. The vocals are bad, but the band does a fairly decent job.

^ Gary Barlow is the lead singer/ main writer with a boy band, Take That, and he appears on The X Factor TV programme. You can hear him on Jeff Wayne's new version of War of the Worlds . . . and Justin Hayward he isn't. In fairness to him, I never liked the song anyway, so his version is no worse than I would expect.

Gary's version is ok but nothing outstanding in the least, and doesn't begin to compare to the fantastic cover by The Black Crowes or the Mighty Otis' original.
